Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Desk

Joanna stared at the papers scattered across the plush office carpet, her mind struggling to process the sheer weight of what she was reading.
Linda, hearing the prolonged silence from the hallway, quietly slipped into the office and closed the door behind her. Her eyes widened when she saw the distraught expression on her daughter’s face.
“Joanna? What is it? What did you find?” Linda asked, dropping to her knees beside her.
Without a word, Joanna handed her mother a thick psychiatric report stamped by the prestigious Avalon Behavioral Center in Savannah, Georgia.
Linda’s eyes scanned the medical jargon, her face draining of color with every sentence.
“My God...” Linda breathed, her hand flying to her mouth. “Derek... Derek has a history of—?”
“It’s not just a history, Mom,” Joanna interrupted, her voice shaking violently as hot tears spilled down her cheeks. “Read the discharge diagnosis. Read what Meredith covered up.”
According to the confidential medical file, Derek—at age twenty-two, just before graduating college—had suffered a severe psychotic break triggered by prescription drug abuse and extreme psychological dependency. But the psychiatric evaluation went much deeper than a simple drug relapse. The attending psychiatrist had diagnosed Derek with severe dependent personality disorder, compounded by intermittent explosive episodes when isolated from his primary authority figure: Meredith Villard.
Further down the page, a legal correspondence letter caught Joanna’s eye. It was a letter from a family court attorney dated three years before Joanna and Derek crossed paths.
Meredith had systematically petitioned the court to place Derek under her legal conservatorship following an incident where Derek, in a blind rage fueled by prescription medications, had destroyed an entire hotel suite during an argument with a former college girlfriend who tried to convince him to move out of state.
Meredith hadn't just bailed him out. She had bought the hotel’s silence, paid off the girlfriend with a six-figure non-disclosure agreement, and forced Derek into a private rehabilitation facility where she controlled every single visitor, phone call, and medical decision.
“She owns him,” Joanna whispered, the horrifying puzzle pieces snapping violently into place in her mind. “She doesn't just dominate him, Mom. She legally owns him. Every financial account he has, every property deed... Meredith is listed as co-trustee or primary conservator. He’s forty years old, and he’s essentially a prisoner in his own life.”
“And you?” Linda asked, her eyes narrowing as she flipped to the final pages of the file. “Why did she want you gone so badly? Why did she try to let you die?”
Joanna pointed to a financial trust agreement attached to the back of the medical file—a document bearing the letterhead of Villard Enterprise Holdings.
“Look at the beneficiary clause,” Joanna said grimly.
Linda leaned closer, reading the fine print. Her jaw dropped.
“The primary family trust fund—worth over twenty-five million dollars—stipulates that Derek receives his full annual disbursement only under two conditions: he must remain unmarried, or if married, his spouse must sign an ironclad postnuptial agreement granting Meredith absolute veto power over any children born to the union,” Linda read aloud, disbelief coloring her tone. “If Derek has legitimate heirs without Meredith’s express, notarized authorization... the entire trust reverts to a charitable foundation managed exclusively by Meredith.”
“When I got pregnant,” Joanna said, a cold numbness settling over her, “Meredith didn't change because she loved me. She changed because she thought she could control me. She thought she could force me to sign away my parental rights after the babies were born, or better yet... she planned to convince Derek that I was mentally unstable so she could take custody of the children herself.”
“And when your preeclampsia started?” Linda whispered, horror dawning in her eyes. “When you were dying on that living room floor during the birthday party?”
“She realized I wasn't going to be her puppet,” Joanna said, standing up slowly, the paper clutched tightly in her fist. “She realized I was a threat to her control over Derek's multi-million-dollar empire. So she decided that letting me—and my babies—die was simply the cleanest way to solve her problem.”
Before Linda could reply, the front door of the apartment unlocked with a sharp click.
Heavy footsteps echoed down the entryway.
“Joanna?” Derek’s voice called out from the living room. “Are you here? Mom said you might have come back for your things...”
May you like
Joanna and Linda exchanged a look of sheer panic.
There was no time to put the documents back into the hidden compartment. Derek’s footsteps were already turning down the hallway toward the home office.
