Chapter 1 - THE SILENT DOMINOES

The flight to Maui was supposed to be eleven hours of luxury for Jack Vance and his carefully curated entourage.
Standing in the terminal below the glass walkway, Jack stared down at the glowing screen of his iPhone. The warm, post-kiss smile that had been plastered across his face vanished so abruptly that Lauren, the blonde pharmaceutical rep standing beside him, reached out to touch his arm.
"Jack? Sweetheart, what’s wrong?" Lauren asked, her voice pitched in that sweet, delicate tone she had spent six months perfecting. "The gate agent said priority boarding is starting."
Jack didn't answer. His thumb was swiping feverishly across his screen.
Notifications were cascading down his display like a waterfall of red alerts:
FIRST TEXAS BANK - URGENT: Commercial Guaranty #8841-B Revoked. Operating Line of Credit Suspended Pending Asset Verification.
CHASE PRIVATE CLIENT: Primary Joint Account #4092 Balance Transferred. Remaining Balance: $0.00.
AMEX CENTURION: Authorized User Access Removed for Card ending in 4011 (Jack Vance), 4012 (Carol Vance), 4013 (Ashley Vance).
DALLAS MEDICAL CENTER LEASING: Corporate Lease Guarantee Terminated by Vance Holdings LLC.
"What is this?" Jack muttered, his face draining of color until he looked paler than he did after an eighteen-hour liver transplant. "What the hell is this?"
"Jack, honey, people are looking," his mother, Carol, said, adjusting her sunhat and looking around nervously. "Ashley wants to get a photo of the kids in front of the jetway sign before we get on board. Come on!"
"Mom, shut up for a second!" Jack snapped, his calm, suave surgeon persona cracking down the middle.
"Jack!" Carol gasped, clutching her pearls—pearls Megan had purchased for her sixtieth birthday. "You do not speak to me like that!"
"Jack, my card just got declined at the newsstand," Ashley shouted, walking over with a handful of magazines and snacks for her children, her face contorted in anger. "I tried to buy the kids some coloring books and water, and the cashier said the card was canceled! Did you forget to pay the bill again?"
Jack ignored both of them. He dialed Megan’s cell phone.
High above them on the glass walkway, Megan stood near a concrete pillar, watching the chaos unfold twenty feet below. Her phone vibrated in her palm.
Jack Calling.
She didn't answer. She let it ring once, twice, three times, before tapping the side button to send him directly to voicemail.
Down below, Jack let out an oath, dropping his hand. He pulled up his banking app, trying to log in.
ACCESS DENIED: Credentials invalidated. Please contact the primary account holder.
"No, no, no," Jack panicked. "This is a glitch. The bank is having a server error."
He grabbed his matching leather suitcase—the one Megan had bought him when he was made Chief of Orthopedic Surgery—and pulled up his American Express app to pay for Ashley's magazines.
ACCOUNT STATUS: CLOSED BY PRIMARY AUTHORIZED SIGNATORY.
"Jack, what is going on?!" Lauren asked, her sweet voice suddenly carrying a sharp, demanding edge. "You said this entire trip was taken care of. You said we had the oceanfront bungalow at the Montage!"
"It is taken care of!" Jack yelled, sweeping a hand through his hair. "I just... I need to call my accountant."
"Call your accountant?" Ashley sneered. "Jack, we have five people here! My kids are hungry! The flight is boarding!"
While Jack stood in the middle of Terminal C, sweating through his charcoal sport coat as his family turned on him like starved wolves, Megan calmly walked down the exit ramp toward the parking garage.
She reached her black Range Rover—a vehicle titled solely under her business entity, Vance Financial Consulting—and climbed into the driver’s seat.
She dialed Gerald Hayes.
"Gerald," Megan said, her voice smooth, level, and entirely cold.
"I'm here, Megan," Gerald replied from his downtown office. "The initial revocations have hit his primary operational accounts. The bank pulled the plug on his surgical center's credit line within forty seconds of receiving our certified affidavit. Since you were the sole guarantor of the $4.2 million equipment lease, the bank executed their cross-default clause."
"What about the house?" Megan asked, turning the ignition. The engine purred to life.
"The Preston Hollow estate is held under the MV Heritage Trust, created by your late grandfather," Gerald said, and Megan could hear the professional satisfaction in her old lawyer's voice. "Jack has been living there under a temporary residential license agreement as your spouse. I have filed the revocation of license with the Dallas County Clerk. A private security team is currently changing the smart-locks on the perimeter gates and front door as we speak."
"And Carol's condo?"
"The down payment on Carol’s condo was a structured loan from your personal LLC," Gerald explained. "She defaulted on the third-quarter interest payment last month, which you generously chose to ignore at the time. I executed the notice of default forty-five minutes ago. She has thirty days to cure the balance of $620,000, or foreclosure proceedings begin."
Megan looked at her reflection in the rearview mirror.
Her eyes were clear. There were no tears. No trembling lips. The woman who spent ten years sacrificing her sleep, her reputation, her career, and her sanity to elevate a family of ungrateful narcissists was dead.
"Gerald," Megan said gently.
"Yes, Megan?"
"Initiate Phase Two."
"With pleasure, my dear," Gerald replied. "Enjoy your evening."
Megan pulled out of the parking garage, driving away from Logan, away from the airport, and away from ten years of a carefully constructed lie.
Behind her, at Gate C14, the gate agent took Jack’s boarding pass, scanned it, and a loud red light flashed across the terminal monitor.
BOARDING DENIED: PASSENGER PAYMENT REVERSED BY CARD ISSUER.
"Sir," the gate agent said loudly enough for thirty waiting passengers to hear. "All six first-class tickets in your reservation were canceled twelve minutes ago by the primary cardholder, Megan Vance. I'm going to have to ask you and your party to step out of the line."
Lauren gasped, taking a step back from Jack. "What did she just say? Who is Megan?!"

Carol’s face turned bright red. "Jack... what did Megan do?!"
Jack stood under the harsh fluorescent lights of the boarding gate, surrounded by his angry mistress, his furious mother, his complaining sister, and his crying nieces, realizing with a sudden, sickening terror that the woman who held his entire world together had just cut the strings.
