Chapter 6 - THE COLLAPSE OF CAROL AND ASHLEY

By the fourth week following the airport confrontation, the financial domino effect Megan had initiated had consumed every single member of the Vance family.

In a suburban neighborhood in Plano, Texas, Ashley sat on her living room floor surrounded by legal notices, debt collection demands, and bank statements.

Her husband, David, sat at the kitchen counter, his head in his hands, staring at a notice of asset attachment served by the county sheriff.

"How could this happen, Ashley?!" David yelled, his voice hysterical. "You told me Jack had everything under control! You told me Megan didn't check those secondary business accounts!"

"She didn't use to check them!" Ashley cried, clutching her hair. "She never asked questions! Whenever I asked Jack for money, he just sent it! How was I supposed to know Megan’s company owned the underlying credit line?!"

"The bank frozen our primary checking account!" David screamed. "They executed a judgment against our house to recover the $400,000 in fraudulent transfers! We have seven days to vacate, Ashley! Seven days!"

"Call Mom!" Ashley sobbed. "Call Mom! She can help us!"

"Your mother is being evicted today!" David spat, pointing out the window. "Look outside!"

Ashley ran to the window.

Down the street, outside Carol’s luxury high-rise condominium, a large yellow moving truck was parked near the entrance. Three uniformed moving contractors, accompanied by two deputy sheriffs, were carrying high-end furniture, Italian leather sofas, and racks of designer clothes out onto the curb.

Carol stood on the sidewalk wearing her white Mother’s Day sunhat, screaming frantically at the sheriff's deputies, clutching her designer purse to her chest.

"You can't touch these!" Carol shrieked, tears smearing her heavy makeup. "I am Dr. Jack Vance’s mother! My son is the Chief of Orthopedic Surgery! I will have all of you fired!"

"Ma'am," the senior deputy said patiently, holding a court-ordered writ of possession. "The property owner, Vance Financial Holdings LLC, has completed the foreclosure process following non-payment of default cure balances. All contents inside the unit purchased with corporate funds are subject to asset recovery."

"Where am I supposed to live?!" Carol wailed, throwing her hands in the air. "Jack! Where is Jack?!"

Jack arrived twenty minutes later, driving a battered ten-year-old Honda Civic he had borrowed from a medical resident who felt sorry for him.

He stepped out of the rusted car, wearing wrinkled clothes, looking defeated, hollow, and utterly broken.

"Jack!" Carol screamed, rushing over and grabbing his arms. "Look what she's doing to me! Look at my furniture on the street! Fix this! Call your lawyer! Pay them!"

Jack looked at his mother with hollow, dead eyes.

"With what, Mom?" Jack asked, his voice entirely flat. "With what money?"

"Your practice!" Carol cried.

"The practice is bankrupt, Mom," Jack said quietly. "The medical board suspended my license yesterday morning. I can't practice medicine in the state of Texas."

Carol froze. Her hands slowly slipped off his arms. "What... what did you say?"

"I don't have a job," Jack whispered, tears finally leaking from his red-rimmed eyes. "I don't have a license. I don't have a house. I have $412 in a checking account that hasn't been frozen yet. Lauren kicked me out of her apartment last night because federal investigators showed up to question her about healthcare fraud."

Ashley ran down the sidewalk, her face white with terror. "Jack! The sheriff just put a notice on our door! They're taking David's car and putting a lien on our house!"

Jack looked at his mother and his sister.

For ten years, these two women had demanded everything from him. They had demanded luxury vacations, designer clothes, private school tuitions, and country club memberships. To satisfy their endless greed and maintain his image as the brilliant, wealthy, successful surgeon son, he had embezzled from his practice, lied to his banks, and treated his wife like a cash cow.

And now, standing on the curb beside Carol’s pile of evicted luxury furniture, surrounded by the wreckage of their vanity, he realized the truth.

Megan hadn't destroyed them.

She had simply stopped holding them up.

"It's over," Jack said, turning his back on them and walking toward his rusted Honda.

"Jack! Where are you going?!" Carol screamed, running after him. "You can't leave us here! Jack!"

Jack got into the car, locked the doors, turned the key, and drove away, leaving his mother and sister standing in the rain among their evicted belongings, shouting his name into the empty street.
