Chapter 2 - THE LOCKOUT AT PRESTON HOLLOW

By 11:30 PM, the storm that had been brewing over the Dallas metroplex broke into a heavy, torrential downpour.
A silver Mercedes sedan—leased under Jack’s practice, which was currently under bank audit—pulled up to the massive wrought-iron gates of the Preston Hollow estate.
Inside the car, the mood was toxic.
The eleven-hour luxury trip to Maui had devolved into a nightmare. They had been kicked out of the first-class boarding line, forced to gather their mountain of luggage, and sit in the crowded baggage claim area for three hours while Jack frantically called every bank, credit card company, and legal contact he knew.
Every single call yielded the same answer: Mrs. Megan Vance has removed her financial backing, frozen all shared assets, and issued formal notices of representation through Hayes & Associates.
Lauren had left two hours ago. She had taken an Uber back to her apartment after throwing her iced latte at Jack’s feet, screaming that he was a fraudulent liar who had tricked her into thinking he was a wealthy surgeon when he was apparently penniless without his wife.
Carol and Ashley had spent the entire two-hour drive from the airport tearing Jack apart.
"You idiot!" Carol shrieked from the backseat. "How could you let her catch you?! Why didn't you leave her at home?! Why did you have to bring Lauren to the airport where anyone could see you?!"
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this!" Jack yelled back, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. "Megan was supposed to be in Austin until Thursday! She had a financial conference!"
"Well, she wasn't in Austin, Jack!" Ashley yelled, slapping the back of his seat. "She saw everything! And now my kids didn't get to go to Hawaii! My credit card is canceled! How am I supposed to pay for my daughter's private school tuition next week?!"
"Will both of you shut up?!" Jack screamed. "We’re home! I’ll talk to Megan. I’ll explain everything. She loves me. She’s soft, okay? She’s emotionally attached to this marriage. She’s just throwing a tantrum because she's hurt. By tomorrow morning, I’ll have her calmed down, and she’ll restore the accounts!"
Jack pressed the automatic gate opener clipped to his visor.
Nothing happened.
He pressed it again, harder. The red light on the transmitter blinked, but the massive iron gates remained firmly shut.
"What is wrong with this stupid thing?" Jack muttered. He rolled down his window, leaned out into the pouring rain, and held his hand up to the digital keypad on the stone pillar. He typed in his six-digit master code.
A loud, electronic beep echoed through the rain: ACCESS DENIED.
"What?!" Jack shouted.
Suddenly, a powerful spotlight snapped on from inside the guardhouse behind the gate. A tall, muscular man wearing a dark tactical uniform and holding a clipboard walked toward the iron bars, holding a large umbrella.
"Sir, you are trespassing on private property," the security guard announced, his voice amplified by a megaphone. "Please state your name and step away from the perimeter."
Jack stared through the bars in utter disbelief. "Trespassing?! I live here! I am Dr. Jack Vance! Open this gate right now!"
The security guard looked down at his clipboard, then clicked on a high-powered flashlight, shining it directly into Jack’s eyes.
"Dr. Vance," the guard said neutrally. "This property is registered under the MV Heritage Trust. As of 18:00 hours today, your residential access license has been legally revoked by the trustee, Mrs. Megan Vance. You are not permitted on the premises."
"This is my house!" Jack yelled, grabbing the cold iron bars and shaking them frantically. "My clothes are in there! My medical records! My surgical equipment! Let me in!"
"If you do not remove your vehicle from the driveway within three minutes, Dr. Vance, I am authorized to call the Dallas Police Department to have you removed for criminal trespass," the guard said calmly. "Furthermore, four boxes containing your personal clothing, toiletries, and non-essential personal items have been deposited at the local Storage King facility on Elm Street. The key has been left with your office manager."
"Four boxes?!" Carol shrieked from the backseat, leaning out the window into the rain. "Four boxes for a ten-year marriage?! Where are my things?! I left my diamond necklace in the guest house!"
"All property inside the main house and guest house is subject to an ongoing asset inventory conducted by forensic accountants," the guard replied coldly. "Goodnight, ma'am."
The guard turned his back and walked back into the warm, dry guardhouse.
Jack stood in the pouring rain, his expensive charcoal sport coat soaked through, his polished leather shoes covered in mud, staring through the iron bars at the lit windows of the mansion he had claimed as his own for a decade.
For ten years, he had walked into that house expecting gourmet dinners, perfectly laundered clothes, organized schedules, and an adoring wife who managed his chaotic life without asking for praise.

Now, he was standing outside in the dark, shivering, surrounded by his hysterical mother and sister, realizing that the house had never belonged to him. The life had never belonged to him.
And the woman he had treated like a quiet, convenient backdrop had just locked him out of her world forever.
