Chapter 7 - THE SETTLEMENT AUDITION

Six months later.

The final divorce settlement hearing was held in Department 4 of the Dallas Family Law Courthouse.

The courtroom was quiet, stark, and formal.

Sitting on the petitioner’s side of the room was Megan Vance, looking flawless, calm, and imposing, flanked by Gerald Hayes and a team of three associate attorneys.

Sitting on the respondent’s side was Jack Vance.

He sat alone beside his court-appointed public defense attorney. His high-priced lawyer, Brent Sterling, had fired him four months ago when Jack failed to pay his legal fees.

Jack wore a cheap, ill-fitting suit purchased from a thrift store. He was gaunt, his hair was thinning, and he looked fifteen years older than thirty-eight.

Judge Harold Thomas, a stern, grey-haired jurist known for his zero-tolerance policy toward financial fraud, sat behind the raised bench, reading through the final decree of dissolution.

"Dr. Vance," Judge Thomas said, his deep voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "I have reviewed the extensive forensic accounting findings submitted by Hayes & Associates, as well as the independent report generated by the court-appointed receiver."

Jack stood up slowly, clutching the edge of the table. "Yes, Your Honor."

"In my thirty years on the family bench," Judge Thomas said, leaning forward and peering over his glasses, "I have rarely seen a case of such egregious, calculated marital waste and financial deception. You systematically converted business collateral guaranteed by your wife’s firm to fund an illicit secondary lifestyle, support extended family members who were actively defrauding her entities, and maintain an extramarital affair."

"Your Honor, if I may speak..." Jack stammered, his voice trembling. "I was under immense pressure... I made poor choices, but I love—"

"Silence, Dr. Vance," Judge Thomas cut him off sternly. "You do not speak unless asked a direct question."

The judge tapped his gavel once against the wooden block.

"The court hereby approves the final Decree of Dissolution under the following terms," Judge Thomas announced:

1. All property held within the MV Heritage Trust, including the Preston Hollow estate, the Aspen property, and all associated corporate entities, is confirmed as the sole separate property of Megan Vance.

2. Respondent Jack Vance is ordered to pay restitution to the Petitioner in the amount of $1,420,000 for documented marital waste.

3. Respondent is allocated 100% of the remaining unsecured corporate debt of Vance Orthopedic Surgery LLC, totaling $1,850,000.

4. Petitioner Megan Vance is awarded a full order of protection, prohibiting Respondent from contacting her, her business entities, or her employees for a period of five years.

"Furthermore," Judge Thomas added, looking down at Jack with total disdain, "the clerk of this court has been instructed to forward these financial findings directly to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas regarding potential counts of bank fraud and tax evasion."

Bang.

The gavel fell.

"This court is adjourned."

Megan slowly stood up. She buttoned her jacket, collected her sleek leather briefcase, and offered Gerald Hayes a soft, quiet handshake.

Jack stood frozen across the room, watching the woman he had betrayed walk toward the mahogany double doors of the courtroom.

"Megan!" Jack cried out, stepping out from behind his table.

The bailiff immediately stepped into his path, placing a heavy hand on Jack’s chest. "Step back, sir."

"Megan, please!" Jack begged, his eyes wide with desperate panic as he realized the full, terrifying reality of his life. He was bankrupt, facing criminal prosecution, stripped of his medical license, and buried under three million dollars of debt. "Just talk to me for one minute! Please!"

Megan stopped near the exit doors.

She turned slowly around, looking back across the courtroom at the shivering, broken shell of the man she had once spent ten years loving.

She didn't look angry. She didn't look triumphant.

She looked entirely at peace—a woman who had reclaimed her life, her pride, her fortune, and her dignity.

"Goodbye, Jack," Megan said softly.

She turned, pushed open the heavy wooden doors, and walked out into the bright, clear Texas sunlight, leaving Jack Vance behind in the cold, empty shadows of his own creation.
