Chapter 1 - Grounded Intentions

The phrase “Stop that plane” was not an empty threat when spoken by Ryker Steel.

In the high-stakes world of international finance and private logistics, Ryker’s influence didn’t just open doors—it commanded entire runways. Within twenty seconds of his call to the Federal Aviation Administration regional controller, the twin-engine Boeing 737 bound for Miami came to a sudden, unexpected halt on the tarmac of O'Hare International Airport.

Sitting on the cold airport bench near Gate 17, Ryker didn't move. He kept his large, calloused hand wrapped gently around Lily’s tiny fingers. Beside her, Owen still held his faded, threadbare teddy bear with a white-knuckled grip, but the boy’s eyes were no longer fixed on the floor. He was watching Ryker.

"Mr. Steel," Marco whispered, stepping closer while maintaining a defensive perimeter with three other plainclothes security officers. "Airport police and the terminal manager are approaching. The flight crew has been ordered to return the aircraft to Gate 17. The passenger in seat 4B—identified as Vanessa Vance, the legal guardian—has no idea why the plane is turning back."

"Good," Ryker said, his voice dangerously smooth. He looked down at the twins. "Lily, Owen. Have you two eaten anything today?"

Lily swallowed softly and shook her head. "She said food at the airport was a waste of money."

A dark spark flashed in Ryker’s icy grey eyes, though his expression remained perfectly calm for the children. "Marco, have the lounge chef prepare fresh chicken tenders, warm milk, and fruit. Bring it here immediately."

"Right away, sir."

Five minutes later, a sudden hush fell over the crowded concourse. Two armed airport police officers, accompanied by the lead gate agent, marched down the jet bridge. Behind them, forced forward by the authority of the law, walked Vanessa Vance.

She was dressed impeccably in her beige cashmere coat, designer sunglasses resting atop her manicured blonde hair, carrying a crocodile-skin handbag that cost more than a average family’s annual rent. Her face was flushed with red-hot indignation.

"This is an absolute outrage!" Vanessa shouted, her sharp voice echoing against the high glass ceilings. "I am a first-class passenger! You forced my flight to abort taxiing because of a 'clerical error'? I will have every single one of your badges for this!"

"It wasn't a clerical error, Mrs. Vance," a calm, chilling voice cut through her tirade.

Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks.

Ryker Steel slowly stood up from the bench. Standing at six-foot-three in a tailor-made charcoal suit, his imposing frame dominated the space. The air around him seemed to drop ten degrees.

Vanessa blinked, her arrogant demeanor faltering slightly as she recognized the man standing before her. Ryker Steel was a legend in the corporate world—a ruthless billionaire known for dismantling corrupt empires and destroying men far more powerful than her late husband.

"Mr... Mr. Steel?" Vanessa stammered, adjusting her coat. "I... I don't understand. What does this have to do with you?"

"You left something behind," Ryker said softly, stepping aside just enough for her to see Lily and Owen sitting behind him.

Vanessa’s expression hardened instantly, panic quickly morphing into cold venom. She cast a desperate glance toward the police officers. "They aren't my children! Their father—my late husband—died three months ago and left me drowning in his debt! I am under no legal obligation to destroy my life for two orphans!"

"You took legal guardianship of them to claim Richard Vance’s life insurance policy, didn't you?" Ryker asked, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her.

Vanessa’s face drained of color. "That’s... that’s none of your business!"

"It became my business the second you walked away from two five-year-olds and left them like abandoned luggage," Ryker replied, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "You thought you could take the three-million-dollar payout, board a plane to Florida, and leave them to become wards of the state."

"They're not my blood!" Vanessa screeched, droping all pretense of gentility. "Their mother died giving birth to them, and Richard lied to me about his finances! I spent three years dealing with those bratty twins! I owe them nothing!"

Behind Ryker, Owen flinched, pulling his knees up to his chest. Lily pressed her face into her brother's shoulder.

Ryker didn't raise his voice. He didn't lose his temper. Instead, he pulled a sleek black smartphone from his jacket pocket and dialed a number on speakerphone.

"Evelyn," Ryker commanded calmly.

"Yes, Mr. Steel. I'm on the line," replied the crisp voice of Evelyn Reed, Ryker's chief legal counsel and one of the most feared family law attorneys in the country.

"Prepare an emergency petition for temporary emergency custody of Lily and Owen Vance. File criminal charges against Vanessa Vance for felony child abandonment, child endangerment, and fraud. Have her bank accounts frozen immediately pending a full forensic audit of Richard Vance's estate."

Vanessa’s jaw dropped in absolute horror. "You can't do that! You're a stranger! You have no relation to them!"

"I have unlimited resources, Mrs. Vance," Ryker said, looking down at her as if she were a insect under a shoe. "And right now, I am the only thing standing between you and freedom. Officers, arrest this woman."

"On what grounds?!" Vanessa shrieked as the two airport police officers seized her arms, snapping handcuffs around her wrists. "I haven't broken any law yet! I was just... I was just getting them help!"

"You abandoned two infants in a public terminal," the lead officer said sternly. "You're coming with us."

As Vanessa was dragged away, kicking and screaming obscenities through the crowded terminal, the surrounding crowd erupted into quiet murmurs.

Ryker turned his back on her entirely. He knelt back down in front of the twins, his sharp gaze instantly softening as he looked into their wide, terrified eyes.

"Is she gone?" Owen whispered, his voice trembling.

"She's gone," Ryker said softly. "And she is never coming back. Ever."

Lily looked up at the giant of a man who had just dismantled their stepmother with a few words. "What's going to happen to us now? Are we going to the orphan house?"

May you like

Ryker reached out and gently smoothed back the golden curls from her forehead.

"No," Ryker promised, his voice as solid as bedrock. "You're coming home with me."
