Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

The news of the "O'Hare Abandonment" exploded across national headlines within forty-eight hours.

The media was captivated by the dramatic story: a glamorous socialite caught attempting to dump two five-year-old twins at a busy airport, stopped only by the intervention of Ryker Steel, the reclusive billionaire titan of Steel Enterprises.

In the luxury office suite of Steel Enterprises in downtown Chicago, Ryker sat behind his massive obsidian desk, reviewing legal documents. Sitting across from him was Dr. Clara Evans, a renowned child psychologist specializing in trauma recovery.

"Physically, Lily and Owen are remarkably healthy," Dr. Evans reported, placing her file on the desk. "However, the psychological damage runs deep. They suffer from severe abandonment anxiety. They refuse to sleep in separate rooms, and whenever you leave the house, Mr. Steel, their heart rates spike significantly."

"How do I fix it?" Ryker asked directly.

"You can't 'fix' trauma overnight with money or toys, Mr. Steel," Dr. Evans said gently. "They need absolute consistency. They need to know that you are a permanent fixture in their lives. They need emotional presence, not just physical safety."

Ryker leaned back in his chair, his hands clasped under his chin. "I am canceling all international travel for the next six months. I am converting the top-floor executive suite here at headquarters into a playroom and nursery so they can accompany me to work whenever they want."

Dr. Evans smiled warmly. "That is an astonishing commitment for a man in your position, Mr. Steel."

"It's the only commitment that matters right now," Ryker replied coldly.

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the executive office burst open.

Marco stepped in front of the intruder, but the man pushed his way into the room. He was dressed in a rumpled leather jacket, his eyes bloodshot and his skin pale and slick with sweat.

"Get your hands off me!" the intruder snarled. "I have a legal right to be here!"

Ryker didn't even flinch. He slowly raised a hand, signaling Marco to stand down. "Julian Vance."

Julian—the estranged uncle of Lily and Owen—smirked arrogantly, straightening his greasy collar. "Ah, the great Ryker Steel. The big hero who stole my dead brother's kids."

"You have five seconds to explain why you just violated private property before my security team throws you out of a window," Ryker said smoothly.

Julian chuckled, stepping closer to the desk, though he kept his distance from Marco. "I came to negotiate, Steel. I read the news. I know Vanessa got arrested. But guess what? I'm their blood relative. Next of kin. Under the law, I have more right to those kids than a total stranger who found them at an airport!"

"You haven't seen those children in five years," Ryker noted coldly. "You're a convicted felon with three warrants out for illegal gambling debts in Nevada. You don't care about Lily and Owen. You care about money."

Julian’s smirk vanished, replaced by an ugly, greedy sneer. "Maybe I do, maybe I don't. But the media loves a good custody battle, doesn't it? 'Billionaire Steals Orphans from Doting Uncle.' Imagine how that looks in court. Unless, of course... you decide to settle out of court."

"How much?" Ryker asked flatly.

Julian’s eyes lit up with disgusting greed. "Five million dollars. Cash. You pay me five million, I sign away all parental rights, and I walk away. You never see my face again."

Ryker slowly stood up from his chair. His impressive stature and terrifying aura immediately filled the room, making Julian involuntarily step back.

"You think you can extortion me using two traumatized children as leverage?" Ryker asked, his voice low and lethal.

"It's... it's a fair business deal!" Julian stammered, his bravado crumbling. "You've got billions!"

"I don't negotiate with parasites," Ryker said calmly. He looked at Marco. "Marco, call the State Attorney. Tell them Julian Vance just attempted felony extortion on camera. Also, notify his bookies in Las Vegas that Mr. Vance is currently in Chicago and broke."

Julian’s face turned bright red, then ghostly white. "You crazy son of a bitch! You think you can ruin me?!"

"I don't need to ruin you, Julian. You ruined yourself years ago," Ryker said coldly. "Get him out of my sight."

Marco grabbed Julian by the collar and dragged him screaming out of the office.

Dr. Evans watched the exchange with wide eyes. "He won't give up easily, Mr. Steel. Men like that are desperate."

"Let him try," Ryker said, turning back to his desk. "I will tear down every institution in this city before I let anyone harm those children again."
