Chapter 9 - The Promise of Forever

Inside the familiar family courtroom of Judge Patricia Harris, the atmosphere was completely different from three months prior. There were no aggressive criminal lawyers, no cameras, and no greed.

The room was filled with flowers, warm yellow light, and smiling faces. Mrs. Gable, Marco, Evelyn Reed, and Dr. Evans sat in the front row as guests.

Judge Harris sat behind her bench, wearing a bright smile instead of her usual stern expression.

"We are here today," Judge Harris announced, her voice filled with deep warmth, "for the happiest duty a family court judge can perform. We are here to finalize the legal adoption of Lily Vance and Owen Vance by Ryker Steel."

Judge Harris looked down at the two children sitting between Ryker.

"Lily, Owen. Do you understand what adoption means?"

Lily stood up on her tiptoes to reach the microphone on the table. "It means Daddy is our real Daddy forever and ever, and no one can ever take us away!"

The courtroom erupted into quiet, sweet chuckles.

"That is the absolute best definition of adoption I have ever heard," Judge Harris said softly. She then turned her eyes to Ryker.

"Mr. Steel. Do you promise to love, protect, honor, and cherish these children as your own legal sons and daughters? Do you promise to provide them with a home filled with security, guidance, and unconditional love for the rest of your life?"

Ryker looked down at Lily and Owen. He saw the trust, the joy, and the pure, unreserved love shining in their bright blue eyes. He remembered the frightened, silent children sitting on that cold airport bench at Gate 17—children who had given up on the world.

And he looked at who they were now: happy, brave, and deeply loved.

"I promise," Ryker said, his voice echoing with absolute sincerity and unwavering conviction. "With all my heart, my mind, and my life. I promise."

Judge Harris picked up her wooden gavel and brought it down with a crisp, triumphant strike.

BANG!

"Then by the power vested in me by the State of Illinois, I officially declare Lily and Owen to be the legal children of Ryker Steel. Their names are hereby legally changed to Lily Steel and Owen Steel!"

The entire courtroom broke into loud cheers and applause. Mrs. Gable wiped away happy tears, while Marco clapped enthusiastically.

Lily and Owen jumped into Ryker's arms. Ryker scooped them both up into a massive hug, holding them tight against his heart.

"We're Steels now!" Owen cheered, raising his teddy bear into the air.

"We're real Steels!" Lily giggled, kissing Ryker's cheek.

"Yes, you are," Ryker whispered, his eyes moist with joyful tears. "You are my children. Always."
