Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Horizon

On a warm afternoon in late July, the sun was setting over the red rocks of the Garden of the Gods in Colorado.

The sky was painted in breathtaking shades of gold, rose, and deep violet.

Lauren stood on the wide wooden deck of her house, holding seven-month-old Maya in her arms. The baby was giggling, reaching her tiny, soft hands toward the golden light filtering through the aspen trees.

Behind them, the glass patio doors opened, and Evelyn Reed stepped out onto the deck, holding two glasses of fresh lemonade.

"You look entirely too peaceful for a woman who just acquired a forty percent stake in a publishing house," Evelyn teased, handing Lauren a glass.

Lauren took a sip of the cool lemonade, laughing softly. "Editing books is easy compared to auditing corporate fraud, Evelyn."

"That's true," Evelyn smiled, leaning against the wooden railing and looking out over the mountain view. "The board approved your new imprint title today. The Horizon Press. First release scheduled for next autumn."

"Perfect," Lauren said, adjusting Maya against her shoulder.

She looked out at the vast, open horizon stretching toward the mountains.

Eight months ago, she had stood in a cold, crowded arrivals hall at Denver International Airport, holding a bouquet of white roses and a broken heart, watching her life crumble into pieces on a tarmac.

She remembered the fear. She remembered the cold, suffocating weight of betrayal. She remembered the moment she realized she was entirely alone in a marriage she had given twelve years of her life to build.

And yet, as she felt the warm weight of her baby daughter sleeping against her chest, as she breathed in the clean, crisp mountain air of her own home, Lauren realized that the airport hadn't been the end of her story.

It was simply the moment she stopped being a spectator in her own life.

She hadn't just survived the storm.

She had become the storm—and cleared the sky for the child resting in her arms.

Maya stirred softly in her sleep, sighing contentedly as Lauren pressed a kiss against her warm, soft forehead.

"We made it, my sweet girl," Lauren whispered into the quiet mountain evening.

And as the golden sun dipped beneath the snow-capped peaks, Lauren Bennett turned her back on the shadows of the past, stepping into the warm, bright light of her unwritten future.
