Chapter 5 - The Escalation

By the end of the second week, Evan’s behavior began to shift from careless comfort to subtle paranoia.
He started coming home earlier. He left his phone face-up on the dining table. He brought Lauren flowers—a bunch of yellow tulips—and placed them in a vase near the kitchen window.
"Just thought you'd like them," Evan said that evening, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind as she stood at the stove.
Lauren felt her stomach churn at his touch, but she leaned back into his chest, letting her head rest against his shoulder.
"They're lovely, Evan. Thank you."
"You seem... quiet lately, babe," Evan said, his lips brushing against her neck. "Are you sure you're feeling okay? You're not having any... health issues again, are you?"
He was probing. Chloe had undoubtedly called him after the country club luncheon, warning him that his wife was asking strange questions about Chicago and airport delays.
"I'm fine, Evan," Lauren turned in his arms, looking up into his dark brown eyes—the eyes she had once trusted without reservation. "I'm just thinking about our future. Eleven months ago was... hard on both of us. But I feel like we're finally moving past the grief."
Evan’s expression softened, a sudden wash of genuine relief relaxing his jaw. "Me too, babe. I swear, everything I'm doing right now—all the travel, all the long hours—it's for us. Once this expansion deal closes with the Vance Group, we're set for life. I can finally slow down."
"I know," Lauren said, gently smoothing his lapels. "How much is Arthur Vance investing again?"
"Fifteen million in equity, plus a ten-million-dollar credit line," Evan said proudly. "It doubles our asset base overnight."
"And Chloe?" Lauren asked innocently. "Does she get a seat on the board?"
Evan’s hands tightened slightly on her hips before he caught himself. "Chloe? No, no. She's just an external consultant. Once the deal closes, her contract is complete."
Her contract is complete.
Lauren almost admired how easily he could throw his mistress under the bus the second his financial empire was threatened. He wasn't just cheating on his wife; he was playing his mistress, too. Chloe probably thought she was going to become the new Mrs. Evan Bennett, crowned with a board position and a high-society lifestyle in Denver.
Evan didn't love Chloe. He didn't love Lauren.
Evan loved Evan.
"That's good," Lauren murmured, pulling back slightly to ladle soup into two bowls. "Because I'd hate for outside distractions to complicate such an important deal."
That night, after Evan fell into a deep, alcohol-assisted sleep, Lauren’s phone vibrated under her pillow.
A text message from Marcus Kensington:
Report complete. The paper trail is fully documented. Evan has transferred $1.2 million from your grandfather’s residual trust into an off-book shell company registered in Grand Cayman, which directly services the mortgage on Chloe Vance's penthouses in RiNo and Scottsdale.
Furthermore, we have acquired photographic evidence of Mr. Bennett and Miss Vance at the St. Regis in Aspen last month—the weekend he claimed his business trip was canceled.
Lauren stared at the glowing screen.
1.2 million of my grandfather's money.
Money intended for her children. Money intended to secure her family's legacy.
She looked over at Evan, sleeping soundly beside her, his breath slow and rhythmic.
She typed a quick reply to Marcus:
Deliver a copy of the audit to Arthur Vance’s private estate attorney in Phoenix tomorrow morning. Make sure it arrives marked 'CONFIDENTIAL: LIQUIDITY RISK ANALYSIS.'

Then she turned off her screen, rolled over onto her side, and placed her hand over her lower abdomen.
"One week left, my sweet baby," she whispered into the dark. "The trap is almost set."
