Chapter 4 - The Country Club Trap

The Tuesday country club luncheon at the Cherry Creek Country Club was an exercise in high-society hypocrisy.

Women in pastel blazers and diamond earrings gathered around linen-covered tables, sipping sparkling water while Chloe Vance stood at a raised podium at the front of the room, presenting a slideshow titled: Authenticity and Modern Personal Branding.

Chloe was stunning in person. Tall, slender, with effortless champagne-blonde hair and a sharp, practiced smile. She spoke with cool confidence, referencing high-profile clients and corporate transformations.

Lauren sat at a corner table with Diane Bennett, wearing a dark navy silk blouse and her grandmother's pearl necklace.

"Isn't she marvelous?" Diane whispered, leaning toward Lauren. "So dynamic. Evan says her firm has completely revolutionized Bennett Financial's public image."

"She’s certainly very skilled at presenting an image," Lauren murmured back softly.

When the presentation concluded, the attendees dispersed into the terrace lounge for champagne. Lauren waited until Chloe was standing near the glass doors alone, holding a glass of sparkling water.

Lauren walked over, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor.

"Miss Vance?"

Chloe turned, her professional smile instantly snapping into place. "Yes? Hi!"

"I'm Lauren Bennett," Lauren said, extending a hand. "Evan's wife."

For a fraction of a second—so brief that anyone else would have missed it—Chloe's posture stiffened. Her eyes flicked over Lauren’s face, assessing her outfit, her hair, her age, before settling back into a practiced, smooth warmth.

"Lauren!" Chloe shook her hand, her grip surprisingly firm. "It is so wonderful to finally meet you! Evan speaks about you all the time."

"Does he?" Lauren asked, her eyes wide with innocent interest. "How sweet. He usually keeps his work life so separate from home. He mentioned your firm has been doing a lot of strategic work for Bennett Financial."

"Oh, absolutely," Chloe said smoothly, taking a sip of her water. "We're positioning the firm for the big Q4 expansion. It’s been intense. In fact, Evan and I were just reviewing the prospectus draft in Chicago last week."

Chicago.

The conference Evan claimed he had spent alone in a hotel room while turbulence kept him late at the airport.

"Chicago is beautiful in the fall," Lauren said, her voice dripping with sympathetic charm. "Evan said the flight back on Thursday was absolute chaos. So many baggage delays."

Chloe paused, her glass halfway to her mouth. "Oh... yes. Absolute nightmare at DIA."

"It must have been," Lauren smiled. "I actually thought about driving out to surprise him at the gate, but he texted me that baggage claim was backed up for hours, so I just waited at home."

Chloe's eyes narrowed slightly, a microscopic flash of caution crossing her features. "Right. Wise choice. The airport was a madhouse."

"Well, Miss Vance," Lauren said, stepping closer and lowering her voice into a warm, friendly confessional, "I wanted to thank you personally. Evan has been working so hard lately, but ever since your firm took over his... account... he seems like a completely different man."

Chloe’s chest rose slightly as she held her breath. "We do our best, Mrs. Bennett."

"I can tell," Lauren said, offering her a brilliant, dazzling smile. "I look forward to seeing much more of you at the shareholder gala next week."

As Lauren turned and walked away, she could feel Chloe’s sharp, analytical gaze burning into her back.

Chloe Vance was clever. She was ambitious. But like all people who operate in the shadows of someone else's marriage, she suffered from a fatal flaw: she assumed the wife was stupid.
