Chapter 8 - The Shareholder Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Denver was packed with three hundred of the city’s most powerful business leaders, investors, and socialites.

Crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant light over tables decorated with white orchids and silver ice buckets. A four-piece string quartet played softly near the stage, where a large banner read: BENNETT FINANCIAL HOLDINGS — THE NEXT CENTURY OF GROWTH.

Richard Bennett stood near the stage in a tailored tuxedo, laughing with Arthur Vance—a tall, imposing man with thick white hair and a military posture.

Chloe Vance stood nearby, wearing a stunning emerald-green silk gown that drew eyes from every corner of the room. She looked triumphant, sipping champagne, waiting for the formal announcement of the $15 million expansion partnership.

Evan stood near the bar, looking like a condemned man walking toward the gallows. He had tried to put on a tuxedo, but his collar looked three sizes too big for his sunken, pale neck. He hadn't slept in three days.

And then, the heavy double doors of the ballroom opened.

Lauren walked in.

She wore an exquisite, floor-length midnight-blue velvet gown that hugged her curves, showing off the faint, beautiful curve of her growing stomach. Her dark hair was styled in sleek, retro waves, and around her neck hung a breathtaking diamond collar—a heirloom from her grandmother's collection.

She looked radiant. Powerful. Sovereign.

Beside her walked Marcus Kensington and Evelyn Reed, both dressed in formal evening attire, carrying leather briefcases.

Chloe Vance froze when she saw Lauren enter. Her eyes dropped instantly to Lauren’s abdomen, then flicked toward Evan, who was staring into his scotch glass like he wanted to drown in it.

Richard Bennett stepped up to the microphone on the stage, tapping his glass with a silver spoon.

"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests," Richard’s voice boomed across the silent room. "Tonight mark a historic milestone for Bennett Financial Holdings. As we prepare to sign our monumental partnership with the Vance Group, I want to invite my son, Evan Bennett, and Miss Chloe Vance to the stage!"

Applause broke out across the ballroom.

Chloe smiled brilliantly, smoothing her emerald gown as she began stepping toward the stage.

Evan didn't move. He stood frozen near the bar, his hand shaking so violently that scotch splashed over the rim of his glass.

"Evan?" Richard frowned into the microphone. "Son, come on up."

"I'm afraid Evan won't be joining you on stage, Richard," a clear, melodic voice cut through the ballroom speakers.

Lauren had stepped up to the side podium, taking the secondary wireless microphone from the audio technician.

The entire room fell into a stunned, breathless silence. Three hundred pairs of eyes turned toward the woman in midnight-blue velvet.

"Lauren?" Diane Bennett gasped from her front-row table. "What on earth are you doing?"

Lauren looked out over the crowd, her eyes resting briefly on Chloe Vance, then on Arthur Vance, and finally settling on her husband.

"I stand before you tonight," Lauren said into the microphone, her voice carrying effortlessly across the grand room, "not just as the wife of Evan Bennett, but as the primary equity beneficiary of the Sinclair-Bennett Heritage Trust."

She turned her head toward Arthur Vance.

"Mr. Vance," Lauren said smoothly. "Before you sign your fifteen-million-dollar partnership agreement tonight, I believe your compliance team should review an emergency corporate filing that was submitted to the Colorado Secretary of State thirty minutes ago."

Arthur Vance frowned, his thick white eyebrows drawing together as he stepped toward the podium. "What filing?"

Marcus Kensington stepped forward, handing a leather-bound dossier directly to Arthur Vance and his personal legal counsel.

"A complete restructuring filing," Lauren explained calmly to the entire room. "Under the terms of the original charter of Bennett Financial Holdings, any commingling of personal trust assets with corporate capital triggers an immediate, automatic clawback of forty-nine percent of the voting equity shares to the primary trust holder."

Richard Bennett turned purple. "Lauren! Are you insane?! What commingling?!"

"The $1.2 million your son stole from my grandfather's trust," Lauren said softly, her voice resonating through the speakers with deadly precision, "to pay off the mortgage and personal luxury expenses of Miss Chloe Vance."

A collective gasp echoed across the ballroom like a wave hitting a cliff.

Chloe Vance’s face turned from pale to ghostly white. She stumbled back half a step, her glass slipping from her fingers and shattering against the marble floor.

CRASH.

Arthur Vance opened the dossier. His eyes scanned the bank receipts, the hotel logs, the photographic evidence of his daughter with Evan in Aspen and Denver.

Arthur looked up from the pages, his face carved from dark, terrifying stone.

He turned his head slowly toward his daughter.

"Chloe," Arthur said, his voice quiet, heavy, and terrifyingly cold. "Is this true?"

Chloe couldn't speak. She looked at Evan, begging him with her eyes to say something, to lie, to save her.

Evan slowly lowered his head, staring at his shoes in silent, pathetic defeat.

Arthur Vance closed the dossier with a sharp slam. He turned to Richard Bennett.

"The deal is dead," Arthur said quietly. "My firm is initiating an immediate liquidity freeze on all Vance Group assets associated with Bennett Financial. Good evening."

Arthur turned on his heel and walked out of the ballroom, his legal team falling into step behind him.

Chloe Vance burst into tears, grabbing her emerald skirt, and ran out through the service doors to escape the dozens of smartphone cameras that had suddenly flashed to life across the room.

Lauren stood at the podium, looking down at the ruined, shattered remains of Bennett Financial Holdings.

She unpinned her wireless microphone, set it gently on the stand, and looked down at Evan one last time.

"Your flight has landed, Evan," Lauren whispered into the quiet room. "And nobody is waiting for you at baggage claim."

She turned and walked out of the Ritz-Carlton ballroom, her velvet gown sweeping the floor behind her, completely untouched by the chaos she left in her wake.
