Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of a Confrontation

On Friday afternoon, six days before the grand shareholder gala, Evan arrived home early in a state of absolute, blind panic.

The garage door slammed shut with a deafening rattle. His heavy footsteps thundered up the wooden stairs into the kitchen, where Lauren was quietly reading a manuscript at the island counter.

"Lauren!" Evan roared, his face pale, his neck flushed red above his unbuttoned collar. "Where are the personal trust ledgers for your grandfather's estate?!"

Lauren set her pen down with deliberate slowness. She looked up, her expression a picture of calm, mild confusion.

"In the filing cabinet downstairs, Evan. Why? What's wrong?"

Evan shoved his hands through his hair, pacing across the kitchen floor like a caged animal. "Arthur Vance’s legal team just halted the preliminary wire transfer! They’re demanding an immediate third-party audit of Bennett Financial's offshore asset reserves!"

"An audit?" Lauren asked, tilting her head. "Why would they do that? You said the prospectus was solid."

"I don't know why!" Evan yelled, slamming his hand against the quartz counter. "Someone sent a tip to their compliance department claiming that our asset base is leveraged against unauthorized trust funds!"

He stopped pacing, his chest heaving, his sharp eyes suddenly locking onto Lauren with a terrifying intensity.

"Did you speak to anyone at the country club, Lauren?" he demanded, taking two long steps toward her. "Did you say something to Chloe or Arthur’s associates?"

Lauren didn't flinch. She sat up straight, holding his manic, desperate gaze.

"Why would I speak to Arthur’s associates about our trust ledgers, Evan?" she asked quietly. "Unless... there's something in those ledgers that shouldn't be there?"

Evan froze. A terrible, suffocating silence descended over the kitchen.

"What are you saying?" Evan whispered, his voice suddenly dropping an octave into a low, dangerous growl.

"I'm saying," Lauren said, standing up gracefully from her barstool, "that I know about Aura Media Relations. I know about the apartment in RiNo. I know about the St. Regis in Aspen. And I know about the $1.2 million you stole from my grandfather's trust to buy Chloe Vance's silence."

Evan stepped back as if she had struck him across the face with an iron bar.

The color completely drained from his skin, leaving him looking like a corpse under the bright kitchen lights.

"Lauren..." he stammered, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Babe... you... you don't understand..."

"I understand everything, Evan," Lauren said, her voice completely devoid of emotion. "I understood it two weeks ago when I stood at Gate B22 at DIA holding a bouquet of white roses and a pregnancy test, watching you kiss Chloe Vance’s temple on the private tarmac."

Evan’s eyes went wide—wider than Lauren had ever seen them in twelve years of marriage.

"You... you were at the airport?" he breathed.

"I came to tell you that our baby survived," Lauren said, her hand resting flat against her stomach. "I came to tell you that we were going to be a family again. And instead, I watched you help your mistress put her luggage into an SUV while you texted me that baggage claim was delayed."

"Lauren! Oh my God, Lauren, please!" Evan dropped to his knees right there on the kitchen floor, reaching out to grab her hands, tears spilling wildly from his eyes. "It was a mistake! A terrible, stupid mistake! Chloe meant nothing to me! It was just for the deal! I swear to God, it was just to secure her father's money!"

Lauren pulled her hands away from his grip, taking a step back out of his reach.

"Don't touch me, Evan," she said coldly. "You didn't just break my heart. You robbed my child's future. And now, you are going to pay every single cent back."
