Chapter 10 - The Whole Cake

Two years later.

The autumn air was crisp and cool, carrying the sweet scent of fallen leaves and woodsmoke through the air.

At Rosetti’s Bakery downtown, the warm yellow light streamed out through the glass display windows onto the cobblestone street. Inside, the shop was bustling with afternoon customers ordering fresh cannoli, hot espresso, and warm loaves of Italian bread.

Amy, the young woman at the register, was packing a box of cookies when the brass bell above the front door chimed cheerfully.

She looked up—and stopped dead in her tracks.

Walking into the bakery was a tall, strikingly handsome man in a tailored dark grey suit. Beside him walked a beautiful woman wrapped in a luxurious cream cashmere coat, holding the hand of a radiant nine-year-old girl in a neat school uniform.

And in the man's broad arms, wrapped in a soft blue woolen blanket, was a chubby, dark-haired seven-month-old baby boy who was happily chewing on a wooden teething ring.

It was Salvatore and Elena Costa.

Amy’s mouth dropped open slightly. "Mr... Mr. Costa!" she stammered, quickly setting her tape down. "Mrs. Costa! Welcome back!"

Salvatore walked over to the counter, a broad, warm smile resting on his face. The cold, terrifying shadow that had once made the entire street tremble was entirely gone, replaced by the calm, deep contentment of a devoted husband and father.

"Good afternoon, Amy," Salvatore said warmly.

Sophia ran up to the glass display case, pointing her finger at the middle shelf. Her finger left a tiny, clear smudge on the glass.

"Look, Daddy!" Sophia cheered excitedly. "They have the rainbow cake with the pink roses!"

Elena walked up behind her daughter, resting her hand lovingly on Salvatore's arm, her diamond wedding band sparkling under the bakery lights.

Amy looked at the happy, thriving family, remembering the cold, rainy day three years ago when a freezing, desperate woman had asked if there was any expired bread for her child.

"Should I... should I cut a piece for you, sweetheart?" Amy asked Sophia with a warm, gentle smile.

Salvatore leaned down, resting his broad hand on Sophia's shoulder, and looked at Amy with a wink that carried a lifetime of love, victory, and answered prayers.

"No, Amy," Salvatore said softly, pulling three hundred-dollar bills from his wallet and placing them onto the counter just as he had done on that life-changing afternoon.

"We take the whole cake."
