Chapter 5 - The Shadows of the Harbor

Paul Moretti’s cars kicked up gravel as they reversed down the long driveway and sped away into the main road.
Inside the study, Salvatore stood over a large map of the North Harbor district laid out across his desk. Marco was pointing at three specific red-marked docks along the riverbank.
"Moretti has already moved two dozen of his armed enforcers into the old shipyard warehouses," Marco reported. "He knows that if Elena files the legal claim at the Fulton County Land Registry on Monday morning, the court will issue an immediate freeze on all industrial development in the North Harbor. He’s trying to force a physical confrontation before the legal paperwork goes through."
Elena stepped into the room, holding two cups of fresh black coffee. She set one on the desk near Salvatore and stood quietly beside the fire.
"I overheard what you said at the gate," Elena said softly. "You threatened a war for us, Salvatore. Why wouldn't you just hand over the land deeds to him? I don't care about the millions. I just want Sophia to be safe."
Salvatore picked up the coffee cup, taking a slow sip before looking at her.
"Because if you give a hyena a bone, Elena, he doesn't leave you alone," Salvatore said gently. "He comes back for the meat. If you hand over those deeds, Moretti will make sure you and Sophia disappear forever so there is never a legal challenge to his title."
He walked over to her, his large frame blocking out the light of the fire.
"Your father spent his entire life working twelve-hour shifts at those docks," Salvatore said, his voice rich with quiet reverence. "He built those piers with his bare hands. He kept those land deeds secret not because he wanted wealth, but because he wanted his daughter and his future grandchildren to have security. I am not going to let a mob loan shark erase Thomas Vance’s legacy."
Elena looked up into his eyes. For months, she had lived in a world where everyone took from her—the landlady who threw her belongings onto the street, the bank that foreclosed on her home, the husband who sold her out for gambling debts.
Yet here was a man whom the entire city feared, standing before her as an immovable shield.
"What do we do now?" she asked, her voice steadying.
"We go on the offensive," Salvatore declared. "Tomorrow afternoon, Margaret Vance—your father's original estate attorney—will arrive here with the original trust documents. On Monday morning, we go to the High Court with an armed escort. But tonight, we shut down Moretti's leverage."
He turned to Marco. "Tell the men to assemble at the warehouse on Pier 14 at midnight. We are going to clear out Moretti's crew."
"Salvatore, no!" Elena gasped, reaching out to grab his jacket. "It's too dangerous! What if something happens to you?"

Salvatore looked down at her hands resting against his suit. A small, genuine smile flickered across his rugged face—a smile that made him look ten years younger, revealing the handsome, warm man beneath the hardened mob boss.
"Nothing is going to happen to me, Elena," he murmured softly. "I have a promise to keep. And I always keep my promises."
