Chapter 7 - The Heart of the House

By 3:00 AM, Salvatore returned to the estate. The house was dark and quiet, save for the flickering orange glow of the fireplace in the main library.
As he walked past the open door, he saw Elena sitting on the plush rug near the hearth, wrapped in a dark red knitted blanket. She was staring into the flames, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees.
Salvatore removed his heavy leather trench coat, handed it to a guard in the hallway, and stepped softly into the room.
"You should be sleeping, Elena," he said quietly.
Elena looked up, her eyes wide with instant relief as she saw him standing there uninjured. She stood up quickly, the red blanket trailing behind her on the floor.
"I couldn't sleep," she said, her voice breathy. "I kept waiting for the phone to ring... waiting for someone to tell me..." She cut herself off, taking a step toward him. "Did you find him?"
"We found Julian," Salvatore said, stopping near the hearth. "He was being held by Moretti’s men in Pier 14. He was going to sign forged deeds tomorrow morning."
Elena’s face went pale. "What... what happened to him?"
"He is currently at the central police precinct under state witness protection," Salvatore explained calmly. "He is signing a full confession that exposes Moretti's entire illegal loan operation. By sunrise, federal arrest warrants will be issued for Paul Moretti and his senior lieutenants."
Elena stared at him, tears welling up in her eyes once more. She stepped closer, reaching out to touch his chest, feeling the steady, powerful thud of his heart beneath his dress shirt.
"It's really over?" she whispered, unable to fully comprehend the sudden disappearance of the terror that had ruled her life for over a year. "He can't hurt us anymore?"
"It is over," Salvatore assured her, his broad hands rising gently to rest against her waist. "You and Sophia are safe. Forever."
Elena looked up into his dark, rugged face. She saw the scars of a dangerous life, the heavy weight of leadership he carried on his shoulders, but beneath it all, she saw the absolute, unconditional warmth of a man who had put his life on the line to protect her.
"Why, Salvatore?" she asked softly, her breath catching as his thumb gently brushed a stray tear from her cheek. "You said it was because of my father... but a man doesn't risk everything he has built just for an old debt."
Salvatore looked down into her deep brown eyes, his thumb resting gently against her warm skin.
"At first, it was about your father," Salvatore admitted, his low voice trembling slightly with rare, raw emotion. "I wanted to clear a debt of honor. But then I saw you standing in that bakery, Elena. I saw a mother who was willing to swallow every ounce of her pride, who stood freezing in dirty clothes just so her little girl could have a moment of sweetness on her birthday."
He leaned closer, his forehead lightly resting against hers.
"I saw a woman with the strongest, most beautiful heart I have ever known," Salvatore whispered. "And I realized that I didn't just want to protect Thomas Vance's daughter. I wanted to protect you."

Elena’s heart soared into her chest. Without another word, she lifted her chin and pressed her lips against his.
The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with a breathless intensity that swept away fourteen months of cold, bitter darkness. Salvatore pulled her tight against his broad frame, his arms wrapping around her like an unshakeable fortress, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure in the world.
