Chapter 8 - The Verdict of the Court

On Monday morning, the Fulton County Superior Court was surrounded by news crews, legal teams, and armed police officers.
The courtroom was filled to capacity. Sitting at the defense table in handcuffs was Paul Moretti, dressed in a faded orange county jail jumpsuit. His slicked-back hair was messy, his arrogant posture shattered by the overwhelming mountain of federal indictments handed down over the weekend based on Julian Miller’s signed confession and seized bank records.
Beside Elena sat Margaret Vance, the distinguished, silver-haired estate attorney who had served her father decades ago.
Salvatore sat in the front row of the gallery directly behind Elena, wearing a dark navy suit, his posture calm, commanding, and absolute.
Judge William Thomas, a veteran magistrate with a stern reputation, slammed his heavy wooden gavel down onto the block.
"In the matter of the Vance Family Trust and the ownership titles of North Harbor Lots 12 through 18," Judge Thomas declared, his voice echoing off the high plaster ceilings. "The court has reviewed the original hand-drawn engineering deeds submitted by Thomas Vance, alongside the verified forensic accounting reports detailing illegal extortion attempts by defendant Paul Moretti."
The judge looked over his reading glasses at Elena, his expression softening into profound respect.
"Mrs. Elena Vance-Miller," the judge stated, "this court formally recognizes you as the sole, unencumbered beneficiary of the Vance Trust. The total value of the port development property—estimated at forty-two million dollars—is hereby transferred directly into your personal estate, free of all prior liens or claims."
A wave of quiet murmurs swept through the public gallery.
Paul Moretti glared back at Elena, his yellow eyes burning with silent, venomous rage, but he was instantly yanked back down into his seat by two armed federal marshals.
"Furthermore," Judge Thomas added, slamming the gavel down once more, "in light of the criminal convictions against Julian Miller, a decree of absolute divorce and full legal custody of Sophia Miller is granted to Elena Vance effective immediately."
Elena sat frozen in her seat as Margaret Vance smiled warmly, placing a gentle hand over hers. "Congratulations, my dear," Margaret whispered. "Your father's legacy is finally home."

Elena turned around in her seat. She looked past the reporters, past the attorneys, straight into the dark, loving eyes of Salvatore Costa.
He gave her a small, quiet nod of absolute triumph.
