Chapter 5 - The Trap at Seven

At 6:55 PM, the streets surrounding the Federal Building in downtown Chicago were dark, quiet, and wrapped in a thick, eerie autumn fog rolling off the lake.
A single black limousine pulled up to the side entrance of the building.
Claire stepped out, accompanied only by her lead attorney. She wore a simple black coat, her posture straight, her expression unreadable.
They rode the private elevator up to the 14th floor—the office of the Deputy District Attorney.
The floor was completely empty, the long corridors dimly lit, the staff having gone home for the evening.
When Claire stepped into Julian Ross's spacious corner office, she found the prosecutor sitting behind his massive oak desk. Standing in the corners of the room were four armed Federal Marshals.
Julian Ross was a handsome man in his late forty, with silver-streaked hair, sharp blue eyes, and a smile that looked like it had been practiced in a mirror for hours.
"Mrs. Caldwell," Ross said smoothly, standing up and offering a polite nod. "Thank you for coming on such short notice."
"Let's skip the pleasantries, Mr. Ross," Claire said, remaining standing near the center of the room. "You said there were irregularities."
Ross’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold, bureaucratic sneer. He reached into his drawer and pulled out a stack of stamped legal warrants.
"Indeed," Ross said, holding up the papers. "Twenty minutes ago, a grand jury issued an emergency seal on Ethan Caldwell's estate. You are under suspicion of corporate fraud, conspiracy to forge estate documents, and..." Ross paused, his eyes glinting with malicious triumph, "...the second-degree murder of Ethan Caldwell through illegal administration of unprescribed narcotics."
Claire’s attorney stepped forward angrily. "This is a outrage! You have no evidence for these absurd claims!"
"I have sworn testimony from Harrison and Victoria Caldwell," Ross countered coolly, signaling the Marshals. "Take her into custody. Hold her in the federal detention center without bail pending arraignment."
The four Marshals stepped forward, pulling out handcuffs.
Claire didn't move. She didn't flinch. She simply looked at Julian Ross with an expression of deep, terrifying pity.
"You really are a foolish man, Julian," Claire said softly.
Ross frowned. "What did you say?"
"You thought Harrison Caldwell was your partner," Claire said, pulling a tiny, high-frequency digital receiver from her coat pocket and setting it on the edge of his desk. "Did you really think a coward like Harrison wouldn't keep recordings of every single conversation you had with him?"
Ross’s face paled slightly. "What are you talking about?"
Claire tapped the device.
A voice resonated loudly through the high-end speakers of the office—a crystal-clear recording of Julian Ross talking to Harrison Caldwell three weeks earlier:
"...Make sure the nurse uses the secondary IV line, Harrison. The compound will metabolize within twelve hours of death. The coroner won't see a thing. Once Ethan is gone, sign the merger papers, give me my forty percent cut, and we can bury his widow under enough legal paperwork she’ll never see the light of day..."
The four Federal Marshals froze in their tracks, looking at their superior officer with expressions of pure shock and disgust.
Julian Ross’s face turned gray as paper. "Where... where did you get that?!"
"From Harrison's private safe at the estate," a deep, dark voice echoed from the doorway.
Dominic Kane walked into the office.
He was not alone. Walking beside him was the Chief of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office, accompanied by six federal agents holding arrest warrants.
Julian Ross stumbled backward, hitting his desk, his eyes wide with sheer terror. "Director... what is this?!"
"Julian Ross," the FBI Director announced coldly, drawing his badge. "You are under arrest for federal corruption, conspiracy to commit murder, and obstruction of justice. Hand over your badge and gun immediately."
The four Marshals who had been instructed to arrest Claire immediately turned, drawing their weapons and targeting Ross instead.
Ross fell into his chair, weeping hysterically as the agents stepped forward and slapped cold steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
Dominic walked slowly past the struggling prosecutor and stopped beside Claire. He reached down, gently taking her hand in his, looking down at her with intense, burning pride.
"You played your part flawlessly," Dominic whispered softly.
Claire looked up at him, her heart hammering against her ribs, feeling the immense warmth of his hand holding hers.
May you like
"We got him," Claire whispered back, tears of relief filling her eyes.
"We got all of them," Dominic corrected softly. "Now... let's go home."
