Chapter 8 - The Gala of Light

One year later.

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was illuminated by crystal chandeliers, filled with the soft music of a sixty-piece symphony orchestra, and packed with over eight hundred of Chicago’s most prominent citizens.

It was the annual Bennett Foundation Charity Gala.

Standing on the high stage in the center of the ballroom, Claire addressed the crowd. She looked stunning in a flowing emerald-green silk gown, a delicate diamond necklace sparkling around her neck—a gift from Dominic on her thirty-second birthday.

"Two years ago," Claire said into the microphone, her voice carrying warmth and authority across the vast room, "I learned that light isn't something you wait to find in the darkness. It is something you build with your own hands, with the help of those who love you."

The crowd erupted into enthusiastic applause.

As Claire stepped off the stage, she was greeted by the Chief of Police, several high-court judges, and prominent civic leaders—all of whom treated her with immense respect, not out of fear, but out of deep admiration for her tireless work in the city.

Dominic stood near the edge of the stage, leaning against a marble pillar, watching her with eyes filled with quiet, fierce devotion.

When Claire reached him, he offered her a glass of sparkling water, his lips curving into a warm smile.

"You were brilliant tonight, my queen," Dominic whispered, taking her hand and kissing her knuckles gently.

"I had good inspiration," Claire teased, stepping close to him, resting her hand on his broad chest. "Are you enjoying the party?"

"I enjoy watching you," Dominic murmured softly, his thumb caressing the back of her hand. "Though I would enjoy it even more if we were back at the penthouse."

Claire laughed softly, her eyes sparkling with joyful mischief. "Patience, Mr. Kane. We have one more duty to attend to tonight."

She signaled to Vance, who stepped forward holding a small velvet box.

Claire took the box and opened it, revealing a sleek, golden key.

She turned back to Dominic. "This is the key to the new pediatric wing at Mercy Lakes Medical Center—the hospital where we first met three years ago. The board voted unanimously to name the wing The Kane Pediatric Center."

Dominic paused, staring at the golden key in shock. For a man who had spent his entire life in the shadows, seeing his name attached to a place of healing and hope was a profound, overwhelming moment.

"Claire..." Dominic whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "My name doesn't belong on a hospital."

"It does now," Claire said fiercely, taking his hand and placing the key into his broad palm. "Because you saved the woman who built it."

Dominic looked down at the key, then looked into her beautiful, loving eyes, feeling a warmth so deep it washed away every last scar of his past.

He pulled her into his arms right in the middle of the crowded ballroom, ignoring the cameras and the applause, and kissed her deeply, passionately, under the sparkling crystal lights.
