Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Water

Summer had arrived once again.

High above the blue waters of Lake Michigan, a luxury yacht glided smoothly across the calm waves, leaving a trail of white foam in its wake.

On the upper deck, Maya was happily drawing pictures at a wooden table under the warm sun, supervised by Elena and Vance, who had become a warm, protective uncle figure to the young girl.

At the bow of the yacht, Claire stood against the white railing, the warm summer breeze playing with her dark-blonde hair.

Dominic walked up behind her, wrapping his broad arms securely around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder as they watched the Chicago skyline recede into the distance.

"Is everything ready for the weekend?" Claire asked softly, leaning back into his solid warmth.

"The island estate in Michigan is completely prepped," Dominic replied, his voice a low, soothing hum. "No phones, no legal documents, no work for three whole days. Just you, me, and Maya."

Claire turned around in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, looking up into his dark, handsome face.

"You've changed, Dominic Kane," she murmured playfully, tracing the line of his jaw with her thumb.

"I had a good doctor," Dominic replied softly, a faint, tender smile touching his lips.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, exquisite velvet box.

Claire’s heart skipped a beat. She looked down at the box, then looked up into his dark eyes, her breath catching in her throat.

Dominic opened the box.

Inside sat a breathtaking platinum ring, set with a flawless, radiant-cut sapphire that reflected the deep, vibrant blue of the lake around them.

"Three years ago, you gave me my life back," Dominic said, his deep voice trembling slightly with a raw, profound emotion he no longer tried to hide. "Six months ago, you gave me a heart. And today, Claire... I want to give you my whole world."

He took the ring from the box, looking down into her tear-filled eyes.

"Will you marry me, Claire? Will you make me the luckiest man alive and be my wife?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness spilled down Claire’s cheeks. She didn't wait a single second. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling him down into a passionate, joyful kiss.

"Yes!" Claire sobbed joyfully against his lips. "Yes, Dominic! I will marry you!"

Dominic let out a loud, triumphant laugh—a sound so bright and full of genuine happiness that it echoed across the blue water. He slipped the sapphire ring onto her finger, pulling her up into his arms and spinning her around on the sunlit deck as Maya cheered happily from the seating area behind them.
