Chapter 7 - The New Horizon

Six months later.

Spring had returned to Chicago, filling the city’s parks with blooming cherry blossoms and warm, gentle breezes off Lake Michigan.

The former Caldwell Enterprises had been completely rebranded as The Bennett Foundation—a massive, non-profit medical logistics company led by Claire as its Chief Executive Officer.

Under her direction, the foundation had opened six emergency trauma centers across low-income neighborhoods in Chicago, providing free, state-of-the-art emergency care to thousands of people who had nowhere else to turn.

Claire stood in the glowing glass atrium of the newest trauma center in downtown Chicago, watching dozens of nurses, doctors, and patients move through the brightly lit facility.

She wore a beautiful navy blue dress, her dark-blonde hair styled in soft waves, a warm, radiant smile illuminating her face.

A arm slid gently around her waist from behind.

Dominic pulled her back against his broad chest, kissing the crown of her head softly. He wore a dark charcoal suit, looking completely relaxed, a contented smile touching his lips.

"The head surgeon tells me the facility is fully operational two weeks ahead of schedule," Dominic said softly against her ear.

Claire leaned back into his embrace, turning her head to smile up at him. "Thanks to your logistics team, Mr. Kane. They managed to clear the medical supply shipments through the docks in half the usual time."

Dominic chuckled softly, his dark eyes shining with pride. "I told you... I own people who open doors."

"Mommy! Dominic!" a small voice called out.

Running across the glossy marble floor of the atrium was Maya—a seven-year-old orphan girl Claire had met at the trauma center three months earlier, whom Claire and Dominic were in the process of formally adopting.

Maya dropped her small stuffed bear, launching herself toward them with a bright, joyful laugh.

Dominic caught the little girl effortlessly in his broad arms, lifting her high onto his shoulder with a warm, genuine laugh that made several passing doctors look over in mild shock.

The feared monarch of Chicago was playing with a child.

"Look!" Maya cheered, pointing out the glass windows toward Lake Michigan. "The boats are coming in!"

Dominic held Maya securely against his side, reaching out with his free hand to wrap his arm around Claire’s waist, pulling both of them close against his side.

Claire looked at the man who had rescued her from the freezing rain six months ago, then looked at the sweet little girl giggling on his shoulder, and felt her heart overflow with a deep, profound joy she had once thought was impossible.

Her past was healed.

Her life was whole.

And her heart was finally, completely home.
