Chapter 3 - The Luxury Trap

The penthouse suite on the forty-fifth floor of the Grand Regency Hotel was larger than any home Maya had ever stepped inside.
Floor-to-ceiling windows revealed a breathtaking panoramic view of the city skyline. Thick, cream-colored carpets swallowed their footprints, and the air smelled of fresh lilies and expensive linen. On the marble dining table sat a lavish spread: roasted chicken, fresh fruit platters, artisanal cheeses, and a silver pot of hot chocolate.
Emma ran from room to room, her squeals of joy echoing off the high ceilings. "Mommy! Look! The bed is as big as a cloud! And the bathtub has a swimming pool inside it!"
Maya stood near the entrance, holding her single worn canvas bag, feeling completely out of place.
Her phone rang. It was an unknown number.
"Hello?" Maya answered hesitantly.
"Miss Harper, I hope the accommodations are satisfactory," Jonathan's voice came through the speaker, crisp and professional.
"Mr. Reeves... this is too much," Maya stammered, clutching the phone tightly. "We can't stay here. I can't afford this."
"The suite is billed to Reeves Global," Jonathan said smoothly. "Consider it part of your executive signing bonus. A company driver will pick you up tomorrow morning at eight o'clock to take Emma to school and bring you to headquarters."
" signing bonus?" Maya echoed. "We haven't even discussed a contract or my salary!"
"Your contract is being drafted by my legal team right now," Jonathan replied. "Starting salary is one hundred and eighty thousand dollars annually, plus full health benefits, stock options, and an educational trust fund for Emma."
Maya gasped, dropping onto a velvet chair. "One hundred and eighty thousand?! Mr. Reeves, that's... that's three times what I made at my old firm!"
"Then your old firm underpaid you," Jonathan said cleanly. "Get some sleep, Miss Harper. Tomorrow, your new life begins."
Before Maya could respond, the line went dead.
She sat in the quiet luxury of the suite, tears spilling over her cheeks. For six months, every breath had been a battle for survival. Every night had been spent wondering if they would freeze in the car or be rousted by the police. Now, in the span of three hours, the storm had vanished.
Or so she thought.
What Maya didn't know was that Jonathan Reeves' sudden act of public benevolence had sent shockwaves through the cutthroat upper crust of the city's financial elite.
In a penthouse across town, Victoria Vance—a senior partner at Reeves Global and Jonathan’s former fiancée—was watching a viral video on her phone.
The video, shot secretly by a teacher on a smartphone, showed Jonathan sitting on the tiny yellow chair beside Emma, declaring that he would buy the school district. It already had five million views.
"Who is this peasant girl?" Victoria sneered, her long crimson fingernails tapping against her crystal wine glass.
Sitting across from her was Julian Croft, Jonathan's chief rival on the board of directors.
"Her name is Maya Harper," Julian said, checking a dossier on his tablet. "Unemployed designer. Bankrupt. Homeless. Jonathan just hired her as Creative Director."
Victoria’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "He used company resources to lodge a homeless woman in a luxury penthouse? The board will call it a gross misuse of corporate funds."
"Jonathan owns fifty-one percent of the voting shares, Victoria," Julian reminded her dryly. "We can't fire him over a charity case."
Victoria smiled—a cold, sharp expression void of any genuine warmth. "We can't fire him for charity, Julian. But if this woman turns out to be a fraud—if her work fails, or if a scandal emerges regarding how she got the job—the board will have every reason to launch an ethics investigation."

She took a slow sip of her wine.
"Welcome to Reeves Global, Maya Harper," Victoria whispered. "Let's see how long you survive."
