Chapter 6 - The Viper at the Gate

The lobby of Bright Start Kindergarten was a battleground of raised voices.

A tall, broad-shouldered man in a worn leather jacket and scuffed boots was screaming at the receptionist behind the bulletproof glass window.

"I’m her biological father!" Marcus Harper roared, slamming his heavy fist against the glass. "You have no right to hold my kid! Hand her over right now!"

In the corner of the lobby, two female teachers held a weeping Emma behind their backs.

"Sir, you need to step outside! The police have been called!" the principal shouted through the intercom.

"Call the cops! Call the mayor!" Marcus sneered, pulling a folded piece of paper from his pocket and slapping it against the window. "I have joint custody papers from two years ago! Maya kidnapped my daughter!"

Suddenly, the heavy glass double doors of the school burst open.

Jonathan Reeves walked in like an approaching thunderstorm, with Maya right beside him. Behind them were two towering corporate security guards in black suits.

"Marcus!" Maya screamed, running past Jonathan and shielding Emma with her body. "Leave us alone! Get out of here!"

Marcus turned around, a greasy, arrogant grin spreading across his face. "Well, well. Look at you, Maya. Nice clothes. Fancy hair. I saw you on the news last night!"

He stepped toward her, his eyes glittering with greed. "The news says some billionaire took my poor homeless wife and kid off the street! Imagine my surprise when I find out my daughter is being used as a PR prop!"

Jonathan stepped cleanly between Marcus and Maya. He stood four inches taller than Marcus, his broad shoulders completely blocking Marcus’s view of Emma.

"You're Marcus Harper," Jonathan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

Marcus leaned back, trying to act tough, but he instinctively took a half-step back from Jonathan’s imposing presence. "Yeah, I’m her dad. And who the hell are you? The big hero?"

"I am the man who had your financial and criminal history pulled ten minutes ago while I was in the car," Jonathan said coldly.

Jonathan pulled a leather-bound folder from his security guard’s hand and opened it.

"Marcus Harper," Jonathan read aloud in a slow, monotonous voice. "Three arrests for domestic battery. One conviction for illegal gambling. Twelve outstanding warrants for unpaid child support totaling forty-two thousand dollars. And currently employed as an illegal bookmaker for the Moretti crime syndicate downtown."

Marcus’s face turned from red to ash-white. "Where... how did you get that?"

"I own the private security firm that monitors this city's municipal databases," Jonathan said calmly. He closed the folder with a soft thud. "You haven't seen your daughter in three years. You abandoned her when she was two. You didn't come here today because you love her, Marcus. You came here because you saw me on the news and thought you could blackmail a billionaire for a quick payout."

Marcus swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the front door as he heard the distant wail of approaching police sirens.

"I... I have rights!" Marcus stammered, backing away.

"You had rights," Jonathan corrected him, stepping forward as Marcus stepped back. "As of five minutes ago, my legal team filed an emergency ex-parte motion with the family court judge. Your parental rights are being formally terminated on grounds of abandonment and endangerment. And if you ever step within five hundred yards of Maya or Emma again, I will personally fund the prosecution that sends you to state prison for your outstanding bookmaking warrants."

The front doors flew open, and four armed police officers burst into the lobby.

"That's him," Jonathan told the lead officer, pointing a single finger at Marcus. "He has outstanding warrants in three counties."

The officers swarmed Marcus, slamming him against the wall and clicking handcuffs around his wrists.

"Maya! Tell them!" Marcus screamed as he was dragged away. "Tell them I'm her father!"

Maya stood holding Emma tightly, tears streaming down her face, but her eyes were cold and unyielding. "You were never her father, Marcus. You were just a nightmare we finally woke up from."
