Chapter 8 - The Sabotage

Victory, however, was short-lived.

Two weeks after the Northridge success, Maya was officially inaugurated as Senior Creative Director. She moved into a stunning townhouse in the city’s historic district, funded by her new executive salary. Emma was thriving, enrolled in a prestigious private arts school where she laughed, painted, and ate delicious lunches every day.

Life seemed perfect.

Then, on a rainy Thursday afternoon, the bomb dropped.

Maya was working in her office when three federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), accompanied by corporate legal counsel, walked into her room.

"Maya Harper?" the lead agent stated coldly. "We have a warrant for your arrest and the seizure of your digital devices."

Maya stood up, bewildered. "What?! On what grounds?"

"You are being charged with insider trading and corporate espionage," the agent replied, pulling out handcuffs. "Two hundred thousand dollars was transferred yesterday from a Northridge vendor account directly into a offshore shell company registered under your name."

"That's impossible!" Maya gasped, her head spinning. "I don't have an offshore account! I don't even know how to set one up!"

"The IP address used to authorize the transfer was traced directly to your personal workstation," the agent said sternly. "You have the right to remain silent."

As the agents snapped handcuffs around Maya’s wrists and led her out through the main glass floor, the entire office gathered to watch.

Standing near the elevator bank was Victoria Vance, holding a cup of coffee, watching Maya’s arrest with a look of serene, satisfied triumph.

"I told you, Jonathan," Victoria’s voice echoed across the quiet lobby as Jonathan rushed out of the private elevator. "You can take a street girl out of the gutter, but you can't trust her with real money."

Jonathan ignored Victoria completely. He sprinted over to the SEC agents, his face dark with rage.

"Uncuff her immediately," Jonathan demanded, blocking the elevator doors.

"Mr. Reeves, stay back," the SEC agent warned. "This is a federal investigation."

Maya looked at Jonathan through tears of terror. "Jonathan! I swear I didn't do it! I didn't steal anything!"

"I know you didn't," Jonathan said, looking her directly in the eyes with absolute, unshakeable trust. "Look at me, Maya. I know you're innocent. I will have you out of there before the sun goes down."

As the elevator doors closed, taking Maya away, Jonathan turned around to face the crowded lobby.

His voice vibrated with a terrifying, apocalyptic calm.

"Whoever set her up," Jonathan said, his eyes sweeping across the terrified employees and landing squarely on Victoria Vance, "has twenty-four hours to confess. Because when I find out who did this—and I will find out—I will destroy everything you own, everything you love, and ensure you spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary."
