Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Arena

At 8:30 A.M. the following morning, Maya stepped out of the private executive elevator on the top floor of the Reeves Global tower.
She wore a crisp black tailored suit that Jonathan’s team had delivered to her hotel room at six in the morning, along with a pair of elegant leather heels. Her long auburn hair was pinned back in a neat bun, revealing her sharp jawline and wide, intelligent hazel eyes.
She looked every bit the high-powered executive. But inside, her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
The glass doors opened into a cavernous conference room. Around a thirty-foot mahogany table sat twelve men and women in dark suits—the board of directors.
At the head of the table sat Jonathan Reeves. He looked immaculate, flanked by thick stacks of financial binders.
To his right sat Victoria Vance.
"Ah, the guest of honor has arrived," Victoria said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. She didn't stand up. She simply looked Maya up and down, her eyes lingering on Maya’s simple pearl earrings. "Miss Harper. How lovely of you to join us. We were just discussing your... unprecedented appointment."
Jonathan didn't flinch. "Take a seat, Maya."
Maya walked to the empty chair across from Victoria, pulling it out with steady confidence. She had spent months sleeping in a car; she was not going to let a woman in a designer suit intimidate her.
"Let's skip the pleasantries," Julian Croft spoke up from the middle of the table. "Mr. Reeves, you’ve unilaterally assigned the lead creative role for the upcoming Northridge Rebranding Campaign—a forty-million-dollar account—to someone who hasn't worked in the industry for six months and has zero corporate agency credentials."
"Miss Harper’s portfolio from her previous firm won seven regional design awards," Jonathan said coolly, tapping a folder on the table. "Her former employer let her go during a hostile takeover, not for performance issues."
"That may be," Victoria interrupted, leaning forward. "But Northridge is our biggest client. The presentation is in three days. The board feels that handing such a delicate account to a... welfare case... is an unacceptable risk."
The room went tense. A few board members shifted uncomfortably.
Maya felt a hot flush of anger rise in her neck. Welfare case.
She placed her hands flat on the mahogany table, looking directly into Victoria’s eyes.
"Mrs. Vance," Maya said, her voice low, steady, and dangerously clear. "Six months ago, I was forced to design marketing campaigns on a cracked laptop powered by a car battery while sitting in a gas station parking lot. I managed to deliver three completed branding packages on time, under budget, without a single revision."
Maya leaned forward slightly, her eyes locking onto the board members.
"If I can deliver world-class creative work while fighting for my daughter's survival in the cold, I assure you I can handle a forty-million-dollar presentation sitting in a air-conditioned room with a high-speed internet connection."
Silence blanketed the boardroom.
Jonathan’s lips twitched upward in the subtlest hint of a smile.
Julian Croft cleared his throat, looking surprised. Victoria’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second.
"Very well, Miss Harper," Victoria said, recovering quickly. "You have three days. If the Northridge executives reject your campaign concept, your employment will be terminated immediately, and Mr. Reeves will face a formal inquiry regarding breach of fiduciary duty."

"Accepted," Maya said without hesitation.
Jonathan stood up, closing his binder with a sharp slap. "Meeting adjourned. Maya, in my office."
