Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Jonathan didn't sleep for thirty-six hours.
He spent ten million dollars in thirty minutes, hiring the world’s most elite cyber-forensic team, private investigators, and former NSA intelligence operatives. They invaded the digital infrastructure of Reeves Global like a digital army.
By midnight on Friday, they found the needle in the haystack.
Inside the server room on the executive floor, a hidden keystroke logging device had been attached to the primary network hub. The digital trail didn't originate from Maya’s desk; it had been routed through a secondary server in Victoria Vance’s private office suite, authorized using Julian Croft’s master security clearance.
At 2:00 A.M. on Saturday morning, Jonathan walked into the central police precinct with a team of six high-powered defense attorneys and a three-hundred-page forensic report.
The federal charges against Maya were dropped instantly.
When Maya walked out of the police station holding room, exhausted, pale, but free, Jonathan was standing in the lobby holding a thick wool coat.
Without a word, he stepped forward, wrapped the coat around her shoulders, and pulled her into his arms.
Maya buried her face in his chest, sobbing uncontrollably as the terror of the last two days finally broke. Jonathan held her tightly, resting his chin against her hair, his arms forming an impenetrable wall around her.
"I'm sorry," Jonathan whispered softly into her hair. "I'm so sorry I let them touch you."
"You came for me," Maya sobbed. "You really came for me."
"Always," Jonathan vowed quietly. "I will always come for you."
Nine hours later, at the emergency Monday morning board meeting, the atmosphere was lethal.
Victoria Vance and Julian Croft sat at the table, looking confident, believing Maya was still sitting in a federal holding cell.
The doors swung open.
Jonathan walked in, followed by four federal marshals and two uniformed police officers. Beside Jonathan walked Maya, looking radiant, dignified, and entirely unharmed.
Victoria’s coffee cup shattered on the floor. Julian Croft choked on his breath.
"Board members," Jonathan announced, stepping to the head of the table. "I have two announcements."
He gestured to the federal marshals. "First, Victoria Vance and Julian Croft are under arrest for corporate fraud, digital forgery, framing a corporate officer, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny."
The marshals moved instantly, pulling Victoria and Julian out of their chairs and forcing their hands behind their backs.
"You can't do this!" Victoria shrieked, her immaculate mask shattering into hysterical rage. "Jonathan! I loved you! I built this company with you! You sacrificed everything for this pathetic homeless girl?!"
Jonathan looked at Victoria with cold, absolute disgust.
"You built nothing, Victoria," Jonathan said cleanly. "You are small, bitter, and empty. Take them away."
As Victoria and Julian were dragged out of the room, screaming and cursing, the remaining board members sat in stunned, terrified silence.
Jonathan turned to the board.

"My second announcement," Jonathan continued, taking Maya’s hand and pulling her to stand beside him at the head of the table, "is that Miss Maya Harper has been appointed Chief Executive Creative Officer of Reeves Global, with a permanent seat on this board of directors."
Not a single board member dared to object. They broke into enthusiastic, nervous applause.
