Chapter 3 - GHOSTS IN THE FINANCIAL RECORDS

The high-rise tower in downtown Boston's financial district housed the administrative front of the Moretti Syndicate—a shimmering monolith of dark glass and steel that overlooked the icy Atlantic harbor.
I didn't stay behind at the estate. Dante had refused to leave me behind where Marco’s surveillance network might strike. I sat in the reinforced rear lounge of Dante's private penthouse suite on the thirty-fourth floor, holding Lily while Matteo’s cyber intelligence team worked across three glowing monitors at the central desk.
"Miss Vance," Matteo said, motioning me over to the screen. "You need to see this."
I walked over, shifting Lily in my arm. The monitor displayed an encrypted cloud drive that had been unlocked using a dual-key algorithm—half from Julian’s old phone records, and half from the Cayman account Clara had accessed.
"Your sister didn't steal that five million dollars, Sophia," Matteo said, pointing at a cluster of wire routing diagrams. "She was acting as an escrow agent. Look at the date stamp."
I leaned closer. The wire transfer was initiated forty-eight hours before Julian died in the Providence warehouse fire. Attached to the transaction were twenty-four scanned pages of internal shipping manifests.
"What are those?" I asked.
"Manifests for weapons shipments passing through Pier 42," Dante’s voice came from behind us. He had walked into the room, wearing a tailored three-piece charcoal suit, his tie pinned with a dark silver bar. His presence filled the office with a quiet, lethal weight. "Shipments authorized using my forged signature, routed through shell companies owned directly by Marco Rossi and two corrupt councilmen."
"Julian found out," I realized, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place. "He downloaded these manifests and transferred the money into Clara’s account as an emergency freeze to stop Marco’s transaction from completing."
"Exactly," Dante said, stopping beside my chair. "Julian gave Clara the money and the files because he knew Marco had compromised our internal security. Clara wasn't fleeing from Julian. She was trying to deliver these documents to a safe federal vault."
"Then why did she leave Lily with me?" Tears welled in my eyes as I looked down at the baby sleeping soundly against my chest. "Why didn't she take her child?"
Dante reached out, his long fingers gently brushing a dark strand of hair from my cheek. His touch was electric, sending a warm pulse through my chest.
"Because Clara knew Marco was tracking her vehicle," Dante said softly. "She dropped Lily in your car to disconnect the child from her trail before Marco’s men ambushed her. She sacrificed her own freedom to ensure her baby survived."
"Is she... is she dead, Dante?" my voice broke into a ragged sob.
Dante looked at Matteo, who pulled up a satellite surveillance frame taken seventy-two hours ago outside an old industrial complex in New Bedford. The image showed a blonde woman in a trench coat entering a brick building under armed guard—not as a prisoner, but as a heavily guarded hostage being held for leverage.
"She’s alive," Dante said firmly. "Marco is holding her in a secure compound outside New Bedford because she refuses to give up the second half of the decryption key—the key that only unlocks when Julian’s true heir is verified."
I gasped. "The key requires Lily?"
"It requires a DNA verification token linked to Julian's lineage," Matteo explained. "Which Marco doesn't have—because he doesn't have the baby. You do."
Dante turned to me, his slate-grey eyes burning with fierce, absolute conviction. "At two o'clock, Marco is going to stand before the Commission and demand I hand over Julian's assets. He thinks I'm coming to defend myself against financial embezzlement."
"What are you actually going to do?" I asked, my pulse pounding in my ears.

Dante reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, opening it to reveal a silver pendant bearing the Moretti family seal—the same oak tree wrapped in iron chains.
"I am going to present Julian's true heir to the Commission," Dante said, his voice ringing like a bronze bell. "And then I am going to execute Marco Rossi for treason."
