Chapter 4 - THE SMEAR AND THE STEEL

The Grand Council Chamber of the Syndicate was situated beneath a historic brownstone in Beacon Hill—a subterranean hall lined with dark mahogany paneling, leather chairs, and oil paintings of former syndicate leaders dating back to the late nineteenth century.

Twelve men sat around an oval marble table. They were the heads of Boston’s major crime families and logistics networks—older men with weathered faces, diamond rings, and eyes that had seen decades of blood and compromise.

At the far end sat Marco Rossi. He was fifty years old, thick-set, with slicked-back silver hair, sharp tailored clothes, and a smug, predatory grin that hadn't left his face since the session began.

"Don Dante is late," Marco announced, leaning forward and tapping his gold watch against the polished marble. "Which only proves his guilt. His late brother's mistress stole five million dollars from our port operations, and where is that woman's sister right now? Hiding in Dante's private estate in Lincoln, living on our stolen money!"

Murmurs of agreement rippled around the table.

"Dante has lost his grip since Julian's death," an elderly boss named Don Carmine muttered. "He protects outsiders while our port revenues drop thirty percent."

"I bring you proof!" Marco shouted, slapping a thick folder onto the table. "Dante cleared ninety-four thousand dollars yesterday to pay off the debts of a broke, nobody woman from South Boston—a woman who is actively hiding Clara Vance's location! He is using syndicate funds to buy the loyalty of a—"

The heavy oak doors at the back of the chamber exploded inward with a deafening CRACK.

The murmurs stopped instantly. Every boss turned in their seats.

Dante Moretti walked into the hall.

He did not walk in like a man under accusation. He walked like a monarch entering his throne room. Four armed lieutenants flanked him, but it was Dante’s towering presence that commanded the dark room.

And beside him walked me.

I was dressed in a floor-length, deep midnight-blue velvet gown that swept gracefully across the marble floor. My dark hair was styled into an elegant, glowing crown, and resting against my chest in a soft black velvet sling was baby Lily, dressed in a white embroidered gown bearing the Moretti crest.

Marco’s face paled, his smug smile faltering for the first time.

"What is the meaning of this theater, Dante?" Marco sneered, standing up. "You bring a civilian woman and an illegitimate bastard into the Commission chamber?"

Dante didn't answer right away. He walked to the head of the table, his slate-grey eyes locking onto Marco with a freezing, lethal intensity. He pulled out the central leather chair, gesturing for me to sit down.

I sat down with complete, unshakeable poise, holding Lily close. I looked Marco directly in his eyes, refusing to flinch under his glare.

"You called this meeting to ask about five million dollars, Marco," Dante’s voice echoed off the subterranean stone walls, low, smooth, and terrified everyone in the room into complete silence. "Let us talk about that money."

Dante signaled Matteo, who activated a high-definition projector at the center of the table. A giant holographic screen lit up above the marble, displaying the unredacted shipping manifests and wire logs recovered from Julian’s encrypted drive.

"These are the manifests for Pier 42," Dante announced smoothly. "Indicating eighteen illegal shipments of military-grade firearms sold to foreign syndicates over the last eight months. Authorized using my forged signature."

The bosses around the table leaned forward, their eyes widening as they scanned the digital signatures and offshore bank account numbers linked directly to Marco Rossi’s primary holding firm.

"This is a lie! Forged documents!" Marco roared, his hand reaching toward his inner coat pocket.

Before his fingers could even touch his leather holster, three red laser dots appeared simultaneously on Marco’s chest—projected from the dark upper gallery where Dante's marksmen were positioned.

Marco froze, his breath catching in his throat.

"Julian discovered your treason four months ago," Dante continued, his voice dropping into a chilling, calm register. "You burned him alive in Providence to cover your tracks. You pursued Clara Vance because she held the encryption key to these files. And you targeted Sophia Vance because you thought a woman without money, without power, and without protection would break under your pressure."

Dante walked over to Marco’s seat, leaning down until his face was inches from Marco's terrified eyes.

"You called her a nobody, Marco," Dante whispered, his voice carrying clearly to every boss in the room. "Look at her."

Marco’s eyes flicked to me.

"She carried my brother's child through cold streets while starving herself so the baby could eat," Dante said, his voice filled with a fierce, burning pride that made my heart leap in my chest. "She stood in a grocery store with forty dollars to her name and fought for this child's life. She has more honor, more courage, and more royal blood in her soul than you ever had in your miserable life."

Dante reached into his jacket, pulled out a heavily stamped parchment document, and laid it on the marble table before the elder Don Carmine.

"This is the official DNA record verified by the state forensic lab two hours ago," Dante announced. "Lily Vance-Moretti is Julian's legitimate heir. And as of this moment, Sophia Vance is appointed as the sole legal guardian of the Moretti estate's secondary trust."

Don Carmine inspected the paper, then looked up at Marco with absolute coldness. "Marco Rossi. You betrayed the family. You killed a son of this table."

"No! Wait!" Marco panicked, stepping back. "I have men outside! I have—"

"Your men outside were disarmed five minutes ago," Matteo said calmly from the doorway.

Dante stepped back, gently placing his hand on my shoulder. His touch was warm, protective, and reassuring.

"Take him to the basement," Dante ordered his guards flatly. "We leave for New Bedford in twenty minutes to bring Clara home."
