Chapter 5 - A SHADOW OVER THE NURSERY

The transition from the Commission chamber to the tactical assault on the New Bedford compound was executed with terrifying, military precision.
However, Marco Rossi had not acted alone. As Dante's primary strike team boarded armored SUVs to head south toward New Bedford, a rogue cell of Marco’s remaining loyalists launched a desperate, retaliatory strike against Blackwood Hill itself, hoping to capture Lily while Dante was away from the estate.
It was four o'clock in the afternoon when the alarm sirens blared across the estate grounds.
I was in the second-floor nursery, changing Lily's diaper, when the heavy reinforced shutters over the windows slammed down automatically, sealing the room in dark metal. The bright interior lights flickered and switched to red emergency power.
The door burst open, and Rosa ran in, her face pale but her eyes fierce, holding a heavy silver revolver in her hands.
"Miss Sophia! Into the panic room!" Rosa commanded, pointing to a hidden seam in the oak bookshelf near the crib.
"What's happening?!" I cried, sweeping Lily into my arms and tucking her against my chest.
"Rossi’s leftovers," Rosa spat, pulling open the concealed steel door behind the bookshelf. "They bypassed the outer perimeter gate with a stolen security code! Matteo’s rear guard is engaging them in the courtyard!"
Gunfire echoed through the floorboards below—deep, heavy thuds of automatic weapons that made my stomach drop into a cold pit of terror.
"Get inside!" Rosa pushed me gently into the small, steel-lined room, which was equipped with independent air filtration, security monitors, and emergency medical supplies. "Do not open this door for anyone except Don Dante or Matteo!"
"Rosa, come in with us!" I shouted, reaching for her hand.
"Someone has to lock the seam from the outside so they don't find the panel," Rosa said with a grim, heroic smile. "I've lived a long life, child. Protect that baby."
Before I could protest, Rosa pulled the heavy oak panel shut, and the magnetic locks clicked into place with a heavy, unyielding thud.
Inside the small room, the security monitors displayed live feeds from the estate's hallway cameras. I watched with my heart in my throat as four men in tactical gear moved down the second-floor hallway, spraying bullets toward the staircase.
I held Lily tight, pressing her face against my shoulder to muffle her soft whimpers.
Dante, I prayed in my head, tears streaming down my face. Please, Dante.
On the screen, one of the armed men kicked open the nursery door. He scanned the empty room, his eyes falling on the open closet and the baby clothes scattered on the floor. He stepped closer to the bookshelf, raising his weapon to inspect the oak frame.
He had spotted the hidden seam.
My breath hitched. My hands shook as I reached for an emergency steel pry-bar hanging on the wall of the panic room. I was six feet tall, broad, and strong. If that door opened, I was ready to kill to protect Lily.
Suddenly, on the camera feed, a shadow burst into the hallway behind the gunman.
It was Dante.
He hadn't gone to New Bedford. He had sensed the trap and returned.
Dante moved like an unstoppable force of nature. He cleared the hallway in three massive strides, disarming the first gunman with a brutal, fluid motion before slamming him into the stone wall. He stepped into the nursery, his weapon firing three precise shots that dropped the intruder before the man could even raise his rifle toward the panic room panel.
Silence fell over the second floor.
On the monitor, Dante stood in the center of the quiet nursery, his chest heaving, his dark charcoal jacket torn at the shoulder, his face smeared with soot and blood.
He didn't look at his fallen enemies. He ran straight to the oak bookshelf.
"Sophia!" his deep voice roared through the intercom, thick with raw, desperate panic. "Sophia! Open the door!"
I hit the emergency release button.
The heavy steel panel hissed open, and the oak door swung wide.
I stepped out into the room, holding Lily close.
Dante froze. When his grey eyes saw me—unharmed, standing tall, holding his niece safely in my arms—a ragged, shuddering breath escaped his chest. He closed the distance between us in a single step, throwing his large, powerful arms around both of us, pulling us tightly against his broad chest.
He buried his face in the crook of my neck, his hot breath washing over my skin, his body trembling with the aftershocks of sheer terror.
"You're safe," Dante gasped, his voice cracking with an emotion I had never heard in him before. "God... you're safe."
I wrapped my free arm around his massive back, pressing my face into his shoulder, smelling the rain, gunpowder, and cedarwood on his skin.

"We're safe," I whispered softly, tears flowing freely down my cheeks. "You came back for us."
"I will always come back for you," Dante swore softly, lifting his head to look down into my eyes. His large hands cupped my face, his thumb gently wiping away my tears. "Always."
