Chapter 9 - THE TRIAL OF SOVEREIGNTY

Six months later, Blackwood Hill had completely transformed.
The dark, cold fortress of stone and secret security arrays had become a home filled with light, laughter, and the joyful sounds of a growing child.
Clara had taken over the philanthropic wing of the Moretti Foundation, using millions from the recovered funds to establish housing assistance programs, child-care subsidies, and medical clinics for low-income mothers across Boston—ensuring that no woman would ever have to stand in a grocery store choosing between antibiotics and formula again.
I sat in the sunny glass conservatory, reviewing architectural blueprints for the new library wing we were adding to the estate.
Lily, now nine months old, was crawling happily across a thick wool rug, chasing a playful golden retriever puppy Dante had bought for her second month living with us.
The glass doors opened, and Dante walked in.
He was wearing a casual linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up, looking relaxed, happy, and younger than he ever had before. He walked over to my chair, leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss against my lips.
"Good morning, beautiful," he whispered against my mouth.
"Good morning, my Don," I smiled, wrapping my arms around his neck.
Dante reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-covered box. He knelt down on one knee on the marble floor beside my chair, his slate-grey eyes looking up into mine with infinite tenderness.
"Sophia Vance," Dante said softly, opening the box to reveal a stunning, emerald-cut diamond ring set in antique platinum. "You brought light into my dark world. You saved my family, you captured my heart, and you made this house a true home. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy filled my eyes.

"Yes, Dante!" I cried, leaning down to wrap my arms around his neck. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"
He slipped the shimmering ring onto my finger, then pulled me into his arms, lifting me completely off my feet as his mouth claimed mine in a breathtaking kiss of devotion. Down on the rug, Lily let out a happy giggle, clapping her tiny hands as the puppy barked in excitement.
