Chapter 7 - The Turning of the Tide

The impact of the Canal Street data leak was immediate and devastating to the Moretti coalition.

By 9:00 AM the next day, District Attorney Albright held an emergency press conference on the steps of the New York Supreme Court. Instead of announcing the expected RICO indictment against Caruso Logistics, he announced a sweeping, multi-agency investigation into the illegal gambling and money-laundering operations of the Moretti family, citing "incontrovertible digital evidence secured by independent sources."

"We're winning, Sarah!" Toby cheered, running into the estate library where Sarah was reviewing the family’s legitimate shipping asset portfolios. He threw his arms around her waist, his face bright with the first real security he had felt since their parents died. "The kids at the private school... they all know who we are now. Nobody tries to push me around anymore."

Sarah hugged her brother tightly, her eyes drifting to the doorway where Lorenzo stood, holding a small silver box in his hand.

"Toby, go to the kitchen. Luisa made some fresh pastries," Lorenzo said softly.

As the boy skipped out of the room, Lorenzo walked over to Sarah, setting the silver box on the walnut desk between them. He opened it, revealing a pair of exquisite, antique diamond earrings that matched the choker she had worn to the summit.

"A gift," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly register. "For the woman who took down the Moretti network without firing a single shot."

Sarah looked at the diamonds, then up at his face. The cold, unreadable mask he wore for the world was completely gone, replaced by a raw, profound vulnerability that made her breath catch. "I didn't do it for the diamonds, Lorenzo."

"I know," he whispered, stepping closer, his large hands reaching out to gently touch the sides of her waist, careful of her healing scars. "Why did you do it, Sarah? You could have taken the money after the hospital. You could have taken Toby and disappeared to another state. Why did you stay?"

Sarah looked into his gray eyes, finding the home she had spent her entire life searching for in the dark alleys of New York. "Because when I was bleeding on that rug, Lorenzo... you didn't look at me like I was a waitress. You looked at me like I was the only thing that mattered. And because... because I’ve fallen in love with the devil of New York."

Lorenzo's breath hitched. For the first time in his adult life, the king of the city was completely speechless. He pulled her against his broad chest, his lips coming down onto hers in a fierce, passionate kiss that tasted like rain, survival, and the beginning of a beautiful, clean future.
