Chapter 9 - The Wrath of the Protector

Before the mercenary could pull the trigger, the heavy concrete wall behind them was completely obliterated inward by the force of a tactical breaching charge.
The explosion filled the corridor with thick white smoke and flying debris. Through the dust, a figure emerged like a vengeful titan from the depths of hell. Lorenzo Caruso stepped through the breach, his tactical shotgun barking with a deafening, rhythmic roar.
BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.
The three mercenaries were neutralized before they could even turn their weapons. Lorenzo dropped the empty shotgun, lunging forward to catch Sarah and Leo in his massive arms, pulling them against his chest with a strength that nearly cracked her ribs.
"I’ve got you," Lorenzo roared, his voice thick with a terrifying mixture of rage and pure, desperate relief. "I’ve got you both. Marco! Clear the upper levels! No survivors!"
The battle for the estate was short and absolute. The Caruso family, driven by the knowledge that their matriarch and heir were in danger, dismantled Moretti’s strike team with military precision. By 3:00 AM, the estate was secure, the snow outside stained with the final remnants of the old guard’s rebellion.

Don Moretti was found two hours later at a private airfield in Queens, waiting for a charter plane to South America. He wasn't arrested by the police; he was met on the tarmac by Lorenzo Caruso and forty senior captains of the city's unified families.
"It's over, Moretti," Lorenzo said, standing over the old man as the cold winter wind whipped across the runway. "The council is dissolved. The city belongs to the truth now. You will spend the rest of your days in a maximum-security cell, watching the Caruso name build the schools your drugs destroyed."
