Chapter 8 - The Desperation of the Dying

A wounded beast is always the most dangerous. Don Moretti, facing the total collapse of his financial network and a mandatory federal arrest warrant, chose to make one final, apocalyptic move.

On a foggy Tuesday evening in December—exactly six months after Sarah had taken three bullets at the Pierre—the security grid of the Westchester estate was compromised from within. A corrupt guard, paid two million dollars by Moretti’s remaining loyalists, cut the primary power lines and opened the reinforced eastern gates.

Sarah was in the nursery, tucking Leo into bed, when the house’s internal backup alarms began to chime—a low, rhythmic, terrifying sound.

"Sarah," Leo whispered, clutching his teddy bear as the lights died, plunging the room into the gray twilight of the winter storm outside. "The bad men are back?"

"Shh, I've got you, Leo," Sarah whispered, her maternal instincts instantly hardening into steel. She had trained for this. She reached beneath the rocking chair, pulling out a hidden silver pistol Lorenzo had taught her to shoot over the past three months. "We're going to the safe room. Come on."

She lifted Leo into her arms, ignoring the slight ache in her ribs, and sprinted out into the dark hallway. Downstairs, the sound of glass shattering and heavy automatic gunfire echoed through the grand foyer.

"Intruders in the main hall!" Marco’s voice shouted through the security intercom before a static burst cut him off.

Sarah ran down the back service staircase, her sneakers making no sound on the concrete steps. She reached the basement level, guiding Leo through the long wine cellar toward the reinforced steel door hidden behind a false brick panel.

But as she reached the keypad, three men in dark tactical gear stepped out of the shadows, their weapons raised.

"Drop the gun, lady," the lead mercenary growled, his face hidden behind a black balaclava. "The old man wants the kid alive. You... he said we can leave you in the dirt."

Sarah didn't drop the weapon. She stepped in front of Leo, shielding his small body with her own, her eyes burning with a fierce, terrifying fury that mirrored her husband’s. "If you want to touch this boy, you'll have to put more bullets in me than Moretti can afford."
