Six months after the foundation opened, the house in Maple Hollow was no longer just a building; it was a home defined by total, unshakeable freedom.
It was a cool summer evening, the sun setting behind the hills in a breathtaking display of purple, pink, and brilliant gold. Inside, the large dining room was bathed in that warm, twilight glow.
I sat in the comfortable armchair near the window, watching Mia pack her bags for her departure to Georgetown the next morning. She was moving with a steady, independent grace that reminded me so much of her mother when she was young. Caleb sat on the rug, carefully polishing his chess trophy, his face completely peaceful.
Lisa walked into the room, holding a tray of fresh cookies, the sweet scent of vanilla and chocolate filling the air. She set the tray down and walked over to the window, sliding her hand into mine as we looked out at the quiet, safe street below.
