Chapter 9 - The Sovereign Table

It was a beautiful, warm spring afternoon in May of 2026. The high maple trees of the neighborhood were covered in fresh, vibrant green leaves, and the air smelled of blooming honeysuckle and fresh-cut grass.
The massive oak table in Lisa’s dining room had been pushed next to the open french doors leading out to the garden. Today was a special day. Mia had just been accepted into a prestigious summer residential medical program at Georgetown University, and Caleb had won the county championship for his middle-school chess team.
The table was overflowing with food—platters of grilled chicken, fresh summer salads, and a massive basket of warm artisanal sourdough bread from the local bakery.
I stood at the head of the table, looking at the faces of the people who filled my world. Lisa was laughing as she watched Caleb try to demonstrate a chess opening using a piece of celery and a potato. Mia was smiling, her notebook open beside her plate, writing down the names of the textbooks she would need for her summer courses.
"A toast," I said, lifting my glass of iced tea.
The children immediately went quiet, looking up at their grandmother with bright, happy eyes.

"To the doors we have to break down," I said, my voice rich with an emotion that felt as deep as the earth beneath our feet. "To the truth that always finds its way into the light. And to the only security system that never fails: a family that looks out for one another, a mother who listens, and the courage to protect the people you love."
"Salute!" the children cheered, clinking their glasses together in a messy, joyful symphony of laughter and clattering silverware.
