Chapter 5 - The Corporate Trap

The war moved from the quiet streets of Maple Hollow to the digital trenches of the federal court system. Armed with the knowledge of Beatrice’s threats, Marcus Vance contacted the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Virginia. Because the fraud involved identity theft, interstate pharmaceutical distribution, and the hacking of a federally underwritten health clinic, the case was officially elevated to a federal task force.

On Friday morning, Marcus arranged a private, high-security deposition at his firm. Darren’s defense attorney, a sleek, expensive corporate fixer named Gregory Ross, sat across from us, looking thoroughly unimpressed. Darren was missing, still held without bail at the regional detention facility.

"Let’s be reasonable, Vance," Ross said, leaning back in his leather chair. "My client is prepared to offer a standard marital dissolution. He will waive all rights to the Maple Hollow house, and he will agree to a mutual non-disclosure agreement regarding his consulting business. In exchange, your client drops the domestic complaints and signs an affidavit stating the medical papers found in the room were part of an independent research project she authorized."

Marcus didn't even look up from his tablet. "Mr. Ross, your client isn't in a position to negotiate a divorce settlement. He’s in a position to negotiate his survival."

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Marcus tapped a key on his keyboard. The wall screen flickered to life, displaying a series of financial transactions routed through a bank in Zurich, Switzerland.

"While your client was busy running his little script mill, his mother, Beatrice, was moving the proceeds," Marcus explained, his voice dripping with an ice-cold professional satisfaction. "Evelyn here spent the last forty-eight hours cross-referencing the clinic’s missing billing records with the offshore accounts we discovered on Darren’s master drive. We didn't just find patient names, Mr. Ross. We found Beatrice’s personal digital signature approving the erasure of the drug inventory red flags."

Ross’s eyes widened slightly, his professional composure cracking for a fraction of a second. "That’s circumstantial—"

"No, it isn't," I spoke up, leaning forward and staring Ross directly in the eye. "Because yesterday at 3:00 PM, federal agents executed a search warrant at Beatrice’s residence in Alexandria. They found the secondary terminal she used to access the state database after her retirement. They also found forty-two thousand dollars in cash matching the sequential serial numbers of the bills found on the bed in my daughter’s house."

Ross slowly closed his folder. He looked at Marcus, then at me, realizing that the entire Briggs syndicate had been systematically dismantled from the inside out in less than a week.

"What are the U.S. Attorney’s terms?" Ross asked, his voice dropping into a flat, defeated whisper.

"Darren pleads guilty to all federal charges of identity theft, wire fraud, and distribution of controlled substances," Marcus said unyieldingly. "He receives a minimum of twelve years without the possibility of parole. He provides a full, unredacted confession detailing his mother’s involvement. And he waives any and all parental or financial claims to Lisa, Mia, and Caleb forever."
