Chapter 7 - The Rebuilt Hearth
Six months after the nightmare in the master bedroom, the house in Maple Hollow was no longer a place of secrets and hidden ledgers. Lisa had used the equity from her clean, independent savings to completely remodel the interior, painting over the cold, muted colors Darren had chosen and replacing them with warm, bright tones of yellow and soft cream.
It was a beautiful, crisp autumn evening. The leaves of the maple trees outside were turning a brilliant shade of crimson and gold, dancing in the cool Virginia breeze.
Inside, the kitchen was alive with the sound of laughter, bubbling pots, and the rich, savory aroma of a homemade lasagna baking in the oven. I sat at the island counter, a glass of red wine in my hand, watching my family reinvent themselves.
Mia was sitting at the dining table, helping Caleb with his middle-school science project. She was fifteen now, her eyes bright and confident, the shadow of the terror she had carried that rainy night completely gone. She looked like a young woman who had realized her own strength, who knew that her voice had the power to stop a monster.
"Grandma," Caleb called out, holding up a model of a volcano. "Do you think we should use red or orange food coloring for the lava?"
"Use both, Caleb," I laughed. "If you're going to make a scene, make it magnificent."
Lisa walked into the kitchen, still wearing her nursing scrubs, but her shoulders were down, her face relaxed into a genuine, effortless smile that I hadn't seen since before she met Darren. She walked over and wrapped her arms around my neck from behind, resting her cheek against my silver hair.
"Thank you, Mom," she whispered into my ear.
"For what, honey?"

"For kicking down the door," she said softly. "For never trusting him, even when I was too blind to see the truth myself."
"An auditor never trusts the books until she checks the receipts, Lisa," I said, turning around to cup her face in my hands. "And your family is the only receipt that actually matters to me."
