Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Briggs

The corporate trap closed with a terrifying, absolute finality. Realizing that his mother was already in federal custody and that his defense attorney had completely abandoned him, Darren’s legendary smile never returned. He signed the federal plea agreement on Monday morning, his hands shaking as the reality of his twelve-year sentence finally settled into his bones.

Beatrice, stripped of her access and facing overwhelming forensic evidence from her own home terminal, pled guilty to federal conspiracy and official corruption. At sixty-four years old, she was sentenced to seven years in a federal women’s prison, her comfortable retirement completely replaced by a grey cell and a uniform.

The house in Maple Hollow, which Darren had filled with expensive furniture bought with blood money, was systematically cleared by the federal asset forfeiture team. Lisa stood on the lawn, watching the movers carry out the leather sofas and the designer electronics that had been financed by the suffering of her own patients.

"It feels like a ghost is being dragged out of my life, Mom," Lisa said, wrapping her arms around her shoulders as she stood beside me.

"It’s not a ghost, honey," I said, pulling her close against my side. "It’s just trash being thrown away."

Mia and Caleb stood near my car, watching the process with a sense of profound relief. Caleb was no longer wearing his dinosaur pajamas; he was wearing a bright blue jacket, his posture straight, his pale face finally regaining its healthy, boyish color. He looked up at his sister, who reached down and playfully ruffled his hair.

"We’re going to be okay, aren't we, Grandma?" Caleb called out to me.

"We’re going to be better than okay, sweetheart," I called back. "We’re going to my house. And tonight, we’re having breakfast for dinner."

The medical board officially cleared Lisa of all wrongdoing three weeks later, citing the forensic IP tracking and Marcus Vance’s comprehensive presentation of the evidence. Her license was fully restored, her position at the clinic secured, and her patients—many of whom had heard about the betrayal—welcomed her back with baskets of flowers and tears of gratitude for the woman who had fought to protect their privacy.
