Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Office

The next morning, Sofia was strong enough to sit up. Her bruises were turning a deep, painful yellow-green, but the fear in her eyes had been replaced by a quiet, protective anger. She watched her father strap on his watch and adjust his dark charcoal suit jacket.

"I’m coming with you," Sofia said, her voice small but firm.

"Sofia, no," I said immediately. "You need to rest."

"Mom," she looked at me, tears gathering in her eyes but refusing to fall. "I need to look him in the eye when his world ends. I need him to know he didn't break me."

Alexander looked at our daughter, and for the first time in ten years, I saw a flash of genuine pride in his stern face. He nodded once. "Get her a coat, Elena. Let's go."

We drove down to the financial district in Alexander’s armored town car, escorted by two security vehicles. The plaza outside the glass tower that housed Robles & Associates was crawling with local reporters, drawn by the media leak from the night before.

We entered through the private basement parking lot, bypassing the press, and took the executive elevator straight to the 22nd floor.

When the elevator doors opened, the office was in absolute chaos. Employees were standing around the cubicles in silence. Two senior partners were arguing loudly in the hallway. And there, standing in the center of the reception area, was Javier Robles.

His hair was unkempt, his tailored suit jacket was missing, and his white shirt was wrinkled. He looked like a man who hadn't slept in forty-eight hours. Next to him stood Carmen Robles, her expensive designer sunglasses failing to hide the desperate terror in her eyes.

"You can't do this!" Carmen was screaming at one of the senior partners. "We built this firm! You can't lock Javier out of the network!"

"Carmen, his security clearance has been revoked by the state bar association pending an active felony investigation," the partner shouted back. "The firm's name is being dragged through the mud! We are hemorrhaging clients by the minute!"

"Javier," Sofia’s voice broke through the noise.

The ConfrontationEveryone turned. The entire office fell into a deathly, suffocating silence.

Javier looked at Sofia. For a second, a flash of his old, manipulative charm tried to break through. He took a step forward, his hands outstretched. "Sofia... Sofia, please. Tell these people it’s a mistake. Tell your father to call off his lawyers. We had a misunderstanding. We can fix this. I love you, remember? We're married."

Sofia didn't move. She stood between me and Alexander, her chin held high, though her hands were clenched into tight fists inside the pockets of her oversized coat.

"You stood outside the door," Sofia said, her voice clear and resonant, echoing off the glass walls of the corporate office. "You told your mother not to hit me too much in the face because people would notice. You didn't love me, Javier. You loved my condo. You loved my father's money."

"Sofia, she's lying!" Carmen stepped forward, her voice rising to a screech. She pointed a manicured finger at Sofia. "You ungrateful little brat! We gave you status! We let you into our family! You’re trying to ruin my son because you couldn't handle a little discipline!"

Alexander stepped forward. The sheer weight of his presence seemed to push Carmen back a step. He didn't look at her; he looked at the senior partners of the firm.

"My name is Alexander Vance," he said, his voice calm, steady, and dripping with financial authority. "As of 9:00 AM this morning, I have purchased the outstanding commercial lease for this entire building. I am now your landlord. Furthermore, I have acquired 40% of the non-voting shares of this legal practice through secondary debt conversion."

The senior partners went pale.

"You have exactly ten minutes to clear Javier Robles’ desk and throw him out of this building," Alexander continued, his eyes turning to Javier like ice. "If he is still here in eleven minutes, I will evict this entire firm by nightfall."

"Alexander, please!" Javier begged, his knees visibly shaking. "My career... I went to Harvard! I worked years for this!"

"You should have spent less time at Harvard and more time learning how to be a man," Alexander said coldly. "Security, clear the floor."
