Chapter 8 - The Criminal Charges

The trial of Carmen and Javier Robles became the most talked-about legal battle in the history of the Dallas County courts. The media dubbed it "The Wedding Night Syndicate."

Alexander ensured that the trial remained in the public eye, preventing any back-room deals or political interventions from the Robles family's former associates. Every day, the front pages of the newspapers were filled with details of their fraudulent lifestyle, their massive debts, and the systemic cruelty they had planned against Sofia.

The six accomplices, desperate to avoid prison time, took the stand one by one. They described in vivid, terrifying detail how Carmen had orchestrated the assault, how she had laughed as she struck Sofia, and how Javier had stood outside the door, acting as a lookout against the hotel staff.

The Breaking PointOn the fifth day of the trial, the defense tried to cross-examine Sofia, attempting to paint her as someone who had consented to a traditional family ritual that had gone too far.

Javier’s attorney stepped toward the witness stand where Sofia sat, her face fully healed but her posture stiff with the memory of the trauma.

"Mrs. Robles," the attorney started, intentionally using Javier's last name to rattle her. "Isn't it true that you knew the Robles family was traditional? That financial integration was always part of the discussion before the wedding?"

Before Sofia could answer, Jonathan Vance stood up. "Objection, Your Honor. The victim’s name is Sofia Vance. The marriage has been legally annulled as of yesterday morning by order of the family court due to fraud and physical coercion. She does not bear the name of an attempted extortionist."

"Sustained," the judge snapped. "Counselor, watch your tone with the witness."

Sofia looked directly at Javier, who sat at the defense table, his eyes downcast.

"I wanted a family," Sofia said, her voice dropping the last remnants of her youth and taking on a fierce, adult clarity. "I loved a man I thought existed. But the man sitting there doesn't exist. He’s just a shell who allowed his mother to beat a helpless girl for a piece of property. You ask if I knew about the financial integration? No. I knew about love. They knew about theft."

The gallery burst into applause. The defense attorney sat down, realizing that every question he asked only dug his clients' graves deeper.
