Chapter 7 - Exposing the Accomplices

With Carmen behind bars, Javier tried to play the victim. He hired a high-priced public defender—since no private criminal attorney in Dallas would take his case out of fear of Alexander’s financial wrath—and issued a public statement claiming he was completely unaware of his mother's actions.

"I was down in the hotel lobby getting a bottle of champagne to surprise my wife," Javier claimed during a televised bond hearing. "I had no idea my mother had entered the room. I am devastated by the injuries my wife sustained."

He thought he could use his legal training to wiggle out of the trap. He forgot about the audio recording.

The Digital BlueprintAlexander’s cyber-forensics team had spent four days breaking into Javier’s encrypted cloud server. Because Javier used a firm-issued iPhone that belonged to the network Alexander now controlled, his private text messages were legally accessible under corporate compliance protocols.

Jonathan Vance walked into the courtroom during Javier’s secondary bail hearing and handed a thick, leather-bound document to the presiding judge.

"Your Honor," Vance said, his voice echoing through the crowded courtroom. "We have the defendant's text messages from the night of the assault. At exactly 1:14 AM, one minute before he exited the wedding suite, Javier Robles sent a message to his mother, Carmen."

The judge looked down at the paper. The text transcript was read aloud into the court record:

Javier (1:14 AM): She's completely unsuspecting. I'm leaving now. Make sure the paperwork for the condo transfer is on the nightstand before you start. Don't leave any marks that a long-sleeve dress can't hide. We have the brunch with the investors tomorrow at noon.

Carmen (1:16 AM): She’ll sign it within an hour. Get the champagne. Stay downstairs until I text you.

The courtroom erupted into whispers. Javier’s attorney lowered his head into his hands. Javier himself turned a strange, sickly shade of gray, his fingers clutching the edge of the defense table.

"Bail is denied," the judge said, slamming the gavel down with a sound like a gunshot. "The defendant is remanded into custody until trial. He is a clear danger to the victim and a flight risk."

As the bailiffs led Javier away in his orange jumpsuit, he looked toward the gallery where Sofia sat next to me. He mouthed the words, “Please, Sofia.”

Sofia didn't blink. She turned her face away, leaning into her father’s shoulder. The man who had once been her entire world was now nothing more than a criminal waiting for his sentence.
