Chapter 6 - The Trapped Bird

The eviction from the office was only the first blow. Deprived of his livelihood, his bank accounts frozen, and his luxury car repossessed, Javier was forced to retreat to his mother’s estate in Highland Park. But even that sanctuary was short-lived.
By the fourth day after the wedding night, the six women who had assisted Carmen Robles in the hotel suite began to turn on each other.
Jonathan Vance’s legal team had identified every single one of them from the Ritz-Carlton corridor footage. They weren't high-society untouchables; they were Carmen's desperate social-climbing friends and distant relatives who relied on her perceived wealth for their own status.
The ConfessionsOne by one, they were brought into Jonathan Vance’s office for private depositions before the district attorney’s office could even issue warrants. Alexander offered them a simple, brutal choice: Sign a full confession detailing Carmen’s premeditated plan to assault Sofia, or be named as co-conspirators in an aggravated kidnapping and felony assault indictment.
By 3:00 PM, four of the six women had signed comprehensive statements.
Excerpt from Witness Statement (Beatrice Vance - No relation):
"Carmen planned the entire thing three weeks before the wedding. She explicitly stated that Sofia was soft and would break easily if humiliated on her wedding night. Javier agreed to leave the suite at precisely 1:15 AM. Carmen brought the heavy leather straps from her home to restrain her. Javier was supposed to return after the document was signed to comfort her and play the savior."
Armed with these statements, the District Attorney signed emergency arrest warrants for Carmen and Javier Robles for Aggravated Assault, Kidnapping, and Extortion.
The Last StandKnowing the police were coming for them, Carmen Robles lost her mind. In a final, desperate act of delusion, she drove her remaining vehicle—an old SUV registered in her sister's name—to my apartment building. She thought she could bypass the security and confront me directly, believing she could still intimidate me into withdrawing the charges.
She was stopped the moment her foot touched the private property plane.
Two of Alexander’s security personnel blocked her path, their arms crossed, their expressions completely blank.
"Let me through!" Carmen screamed, her expensive clothes now wrinkled, her hair messy, the facade completely shattered. "Elena! Come down here! You're destroying my family! My son has a future! You're a bitter, divorced woman trying to ruin my life!"
I walked out onto the second-floor balcony, looking down at her. Alexander stood right behind me, his hand resting securely on the small of my back.
"I didn't destroy your family, Carmen," I called down, my voice filled with a profound, calm satisfaction. "Your greed did. You thought you could treat my daughter like a piece of real estate. You forgot that she has a family that loves her."
"I'll sue you!" Carmen yelled, her voice cracking as the distant sound of police sirens began to echo down the Dallas street. "I'll take everything you have!"
"With what money, Carmen?" Alexander spoke up, his voice carrying over the wind. "The police are behind you. And your bail has already been set at a number you can't afford."
Carmen turned around as three Dallas Police cruisers pulled up to the curb, their lights flashing red and blue against the concrete. Two female officers stepped out, their hands on their utility belts.

"Carmen Robles?" the lead officer asked. "You are under arrest for felony extortion and aggravated assault."
As the metal handcuffs clicked around Carmen's wrists, she looked up at the balcony one last time. The arrogance was completely gone. There was only the empty, hollow stare of a woman who had gambled everything on a lie and lost.
