Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the Envelope

Three days later, the rain had cleared, leaving Portland cold, crisp, and blindingly bright.

At Ridgewood Drive, the morning was proceeding with Evelyn’s usual quiet vanity. She sat at her mahogany dining table, sipping tea from a porcelain cup. Natalie was lounging on the sofa, scrolling through her phone, while Frank read the digital newspaper.

"I must say," Natalie remarked, not looking up, "the house feels incredibly peaceful now. No middle-school clutter. No loud footsteps."

Evelyn smiled, a thin, satisfied line. "An undisciplined child is a symptom of an undisciplined mother. Claire chose to prioritize her career over maintaining a proper household here. She needed to learn that actions have consequences."

"Do you think she’ll sue?" Frank asked quietly, his voice laced with his usual undercurrent of cowardice.

Evelyn scoffed. "With what money? Claire makes a government salary. Besides, she has no grounds. This is my house. I allowed her to stay here out of charity. If I choose to withdraw that charity, that is my prerogative."

The doorbell rang.

Frank got up to answer it. A mail carrier stood on the porch holding a clipboard.

"Certified mail for Evelyn Mercer. Sign here, please."

Frank signed the digital pad, took the heavy cardboard envelope, and walked back into the dining room. "Evelyn, it’s for you. Certified."

Evelyn’s brow furrowed. She took the envelope, her eyes registering the official return address: The Law Offices of Vance, Sterling & Associates, with Claire’s name listed as the primary representative in association with Senior Partner Marcus Vance—one of the most feared estate litigators in the state.

With a silver letter opener, Evelyn sliced the top of the envelope. She pulled out the thick stack of papers.

As she read the first page, the color drained from her face so rapidly that her pearls seemed to glow brighter by comparison.

"What is it?" Natalie asked, sitting up.

Evelyn didn't answer. Her eyes raced across the lines of text.

NOTICE OF BREACH OF TRUST, UNLAWFUL EVICTION, AND DEMAND FOR IMMEDIATE VACATION OF PREMISES

"This... this is absurd," Evelyn muttered, her voice shaking. "She’s claiming I breached the trust. She’s claiming she has a right to evict us."

"What?" Natalie snatched the papers from her mother's hands. She flipped through them, her eyes widening as she saw the police report and Mrs. Dalton's signed statement. "She filed a police report for child endangerment? Against you? Against us?"

"Read the next page," Evelyn whispered, her hands beginning to tremble.

Natalie turned the page.

“Pursuant to Section 8 of the Arthur Mercer Trust, any material breach of the residency and preservation clauses by the Life Tenant results in the immediate, automatic termination of the Life Estate. You are hereby notified that your life estate has been terminated for cause. You, Natalie Mercer, and Frank Vance are hereby ordered to vacate the premises of 1402 Ridgewood Drive within fourteen (14) business days. Failure to comply will result in an immediate action for ejectment and sheriff-assisted removal.”

The room fell into a suffocating silence.

The lock they had changed to keep an eleven-year-old girl out was now the very lock that would be used to bar them from the only home they had ever known.
