Chapter 9 - The Trial of Evelyn Mercer

The trial was a media sensation in Portland. The "Porch Lockout Case" had captured the public’s attention, drawing sharp focus onto the issues of elder abuse, child neglect, and family greed.

Evelyn sat at the defense table, looking frail and aged. Without her expensive makeup, her designer clothes, and her social standing, she looked like what she truly was: a bitter, lonely woman who had destroyed her own life through malice.

Natalie had taken a plea deal. In exchange for testifying against her mother, she received five years of probation, community service, and the permanent revocation of her notary license. She sat in the gallery, refusing to look at her mother.

Frank had fled the state, his marriage to Natalie officially over, leaving behind nothing but his signed confession.

Claire took the stand as the primary witness.

She stood tall, her voice calm, clear, and utterly devoid of anger as she detailed the years of emotional abuse, the financial manipulation, and finally, the night she found her daughter freezing in the rain.

"I didn't yell at my mother," Claire testified, looking directly at the jury. "Because I realized that anger was what she wanted. She wanted a dramatic fight to justify her cruelty. But the truth doesn't need drama. The truth simply needs to be spoken."

When the defense attorney tried to cross-examine her, suggesting she was seeking revenge, Claire shut him down with a single, devastating sentence.

"I didn't want revenge. I wanted safety for my child. And the law has provided that."

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

"On the count of criminal mistreatment in the first degree, we find the defendant, Evelyn Mercer, guilty." "On the count of felony financial fraud, we find the defendant, guilty."

The judge sentenced Evelyn to four years in a state penitentiary, with no possibility of early parole due to the vulnerable nature of the victim. She was also ordered to pay full restitution of $450,000 to Claire and Lily, to be drawn from her seized offshore accounts.

As Evelyn was led away in chains, she stopped in front of Claire.

"Claire..." Evelyn whispered, her eyes pleading. "Please... I'm your mother."

Claire looked at her, her expression soft but completely unyielding.

"Understood," Claire said.

It was the last word she would ever speak to her mother.
