Chapter 5 - The Fall of Ridgewood Drive

The evacuation of 1402 Ridgewood Drive was not quiet.

By Saturday afternoon, word had spread through the historic neighborhood. Mrs. Dalton and several other neighbors stood on their lawns, watching as a cheap, rented moving truck sat in the driveway.

Natalie and Frank were frantically throwing clothes, books, and kitchenware into cardboard boxes. Evelyn sat in her favorite armchair, refusing to pack a single thing, her eyes vacant and staring at the wall.

"We have to go, Mother!" Natalie yelled, her voice stressed and high-pitched. "The movers charge by the hour, and Frank and I can't afford to keep this truck overnight!"

"This is my house," Evelyn whispered. "Arthur gave me this house."

"No, Arthur gave the trust the house!" Natalie snapped, her true colors finally showing now that her mother’s wealth and status were evaporating. "And you lost it because you couldn't control your ego for one afternoon! Do you know what this does to my reputation? My friends are asking me why the police were at our door!"

"I did it for you!" Evelyn cried out. "I wanted you to have the master suite! I wanted Claire and her bastard child out so we could be a real family!"

"Well, now we're homeless!" Natalie screamed. "Frank’s credit is ruined, and we don't have enough money for a deposit on a decent apartment in this city! We're going to have to live in a motel!"

At exactly 11:50 AM on Sunday, a sleek black SUV pulled up to the curb.

Claire got out of the driver's seat. She walked to the passenger side and opened the door. Lily stepped out, wearing a dry, bright yellow raincoat and a pair of clean, warm boots.

They walked up the driveway together.

Evelyn, Natalie, and Frank were standing by the back of the moving truck, holding the last of their mismatched boxes.

Claire stopped at the edge of the porch. She looked at her mother, her sister, and her stepfather. She didn't look angry. She didn't look smug. Her face was a mask of absolute calm.

"Your time is up," Claire said.

"You think you've won, Claire?" Evelyn spat, her voice trembling with hatred. "You've destroyed this family. You've cast your own mother onto the street. You will burn in hell for this."

"I didn't cast you out, Evelyn," Claire replied smoothly. "You evicted yourself the moment you locked my daughter out in the rain. I simply let the law do its job."

She looked at Frank and Natalie. "I suggest you leave before the sheriff's deputies, who are currently parked at the end of the block, come to assist you."

Frank quickly climbed into the cab of the moving truck. Natalie glared at Claire, her eyes spitting venom, before slamming the passenger door.

Evelyn stood alone on the pavement. She looked up at the beautiful Craftsman house, the symbol of her status, now gone forever. With a final, bitter look at Claire, she turned and climbed into the truck.

As the truck rumbled down the street, Lily looked up at Claire.

"Mom? Is it really ours now?"

Claire took the brass key from her pocket. She handed it to Lily.

"It's yours, sweetheart. Go ahead. Open the door."

Lily walked up the steps, inserted the key, and with a smooth, solid click, the door swung open to a warm, sunlit hallway.
