Chapter 7 - The Discovery of the Hidden Assets

As Claire went through her father’s old papers stored in the attic of the Ridgewood house, she made a startling discovery.

Deep inside an old leather trunk that had belonged to Arthur Mercer, beneath layers of old tax returns and family photos, she found a false bottom. Inside was a thick manila folder labeled: E.M. — Private Accounts.

Claire opened it. Inside were bank statements from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands, registered under a shell corporation called EM Preservation LLC.

Evelyn had been hiding money.

During Arthur’s probate years ago, Evelyn had claimed she was virtually destitute, which was the only reason Claire had agreed to use her own life savings to pay off the mortgage and save the house. Evelyn had wept in court, claiming she had nothing left but her love for her family.

But these statements showed a steady stream of transfers—amounting to over $450,000—funneled out of Arthur’s estate right before his death, entirely bypassing the probate court and the taxes owed to the state.

Claire called Marcus Vance immediately.

"Marcus, you won't believe what I just found. Evelyn didn't just breach the trust. She committed probate fraud, tax evasion, and grand theft against her husband's estate."

"Are you sure?" Marcus asked, his voice sharpening with professional interest.

"I have the original transfer slips signed by Evelyn and Natalie. Natalie acted as the notary for the transactions."

"Oh, this is beautiful," Marcus said. "Natalie is a licensed notary public. If she notarized fraudulent transfers to a shell company she had a financial interest in, she’s not just facing civil liability. She’s looking at felony fraud charges and the permanent loss of her professional licenses."

"What do we do?" Claire asked.

"We don't go to court yet," Marcus advised. "We present this to the District Attorney's office as part of the ongoing criminal investigation. This gives them the leverage they need to get Natalie or Frank to turn on Evelyn. The moment one of them breaks, the whole house of cards falls."

Claire looked out the window at Lily, who was playing in the backyard with Mrs. Dalton's dog, her laughter ringing out clear and bright through the cool Portland air.

"Let them break," Claire said.
