My eleven-year-old daughter came home from school and discovered that her key no longer opened the front door.

The pressure from the District Attorney’s office was relentless. Facing a potential five-year prison sentence for conspiracy and financial fraud, Frank was the first to snap.

He secretly met with the prosecutor, accompanied by a public defender.

"I’ll tell you everything," Frank offered, his voice trembling. "I’ll tell you about the lock, about how Evelyn planned it for weeks to force Claire to move out so we could rent her room. I’ll tell you about the offshore accounts. Just... please, make sure I don't go to prison."

Within twenty-four hours, Frank’s confession was on the DA’s desk.

Armed with Frank’s testimony and the bank records Claire had discovered, the police executed an arrest warrant for Evelyn Mercer and Natalie Mercer.

The arrest took place at Natalie's cramped apartment.

When the officers knocked on the door, Evelyn tried to maintain her aristocratic dignity. "Do you know who I am? I am Evelyn Mercer. I have lived in this city my entire life!"

"Ma'am, you have the right to remain silent," the officer said coldly, pulling her arms behind her back and clicking the steel handcuffs into place.

"Natalie! Do something!" Evelyn shrieked as she was led down the narrow hallway of the apartment building.

But Natalie was already in handcuffs, weeping uncontrollably. "It's your fault! You did this to us! I hate you! I hate you!"

The neighbors came out of their apartments, holding up their phones to record the fall of the proud Mercer women. The footage of Evelyn, her hair disheveled, her cream cardigan stained, being pushed into the back of a police cruiser, was broadcast on the local evening news.

In her warm living room on Ridgewood Drive, Claire turned off the television.

She walked over to Lily, who was sitting on the rug, reading a book. Claire sat down beside her and wrapped her arms around her daughter.
