Chapter 2 - The Audit of Vengeance

By midnight, the news of Ethan Cole and Bianca Thorne’s arrest had broken across every major financial news network. The headlines were relentless: Billionaire Groom Arrested Hours Before High-Society Wedding and Cole Enterprises Under Federal Investigation for Multi-Million Dollar Fraud.
Sitting in a private room at St. Matthew’s Hospital, I watched the television screen with a calm that unsettled even Evelyn. She sat across from me with her laptop open, scrolling through real-time market updates.
"Cole Enterprises stock has dropped forty percent in after-hours trading," Evelyn reported, a sharp smile touching her lips. "Their board of directors is panicking. Three major institutional investors have already pulled their capital, and the SEC has formally frozen all corporate liquidity."
"What about the primary escrow account?" I asked, sipping warm tea from a paper cup.
"Secured," Evelyn confirmed. "Because the original articles of incorporation contained the hidden trust clause you drafted in 2018, forty-five percent of the company's asset holdings automatically reverted to your private account the moment Ethan was indicted for a felony involving corporate malfeasance. He literally handed you the keys to his kingdom when he let Bianca assault you."
A light knock sounded at the door, and Dr. Elena Reyes stepped inside, holding a clipboard. "Ms. Bennett? Noah is doing exceptionally well. His blood oxygen levels are stable, and we're moving him out of the intensive care unit tomorrow morning."
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes—not from sadness, but from pure relief. "Thank you, Dr. Reyes. Can I hold him again?"
"In an hour, when we finish his feeding cycle," Dr. Reyes smiled softly. "You’ve been through a war tonight, Claire. Make sure you rest."
After Dr. Reyes left, Evelyn closed her laptop and looked at me with deep curiosity. "Claire, you have enough evidence to send Ethan to prison for fifteen years and bankrupt Bianca’s family entirely. But the court hearing tomorrow morning for the emergency asset freeze is going to be brutal. Ethan’s father, Arthur Cole, has retained the biggest criminal defense firm in New York."
"Arthur Cole thinks money can erase any mistake," I said quietly, staring at the cityscape framed by the window. "He taught Ethan everything he knows about cheating people. He built his wealth by trampling over small contractors and cheating his first wife out of her pension. He's going to try to buy off the judges, frame Bianca as the sole bad actor, and claim Ethan was an innocent bystander."
"Can he succeed?"
"Not with the evidence I handed the forensic team," I replied. "I spent six months auditing every transaction Ethan made after he asked for a divorce. He didn't just steal from me—he stole from Arthur’s business partners, too. Arthur doesn't know it yet, but Ethan was using his father’s trust fund as collateral for high-risk offshore crypto trades to keep Bianca’s extravagant lifestyle funded."
Evelyn chuckled, shaking her head. "He literally liquidated his own family's safety net?"
"Ethan was always desperate to prove he was smarter than his father," I said. "Tomorrow, Arthur will realize his son destroyed them both."
The next morning at 9:00 AM, the Manhattan Supreme Court building was mobbed by journalists and photographers. Flanked by Evelyn and two security guards provided by the district attorney’s office, I walked up the marble steps in a tailored navy blazer and dark trousers. I wore no jewelry except for a plain silver watch—a stark contrast to Arthur Cole, who strutted into the courtroom wearing a tailored Italian suit, accompanied by four high-powered defense attorneys.
Ethan sat at the defense table in a orange prison jumpsuit, his hair unwashed and his hands handcuffed at his waist. Beside him, Bianca looked disheveled in her holding-cell clothes, her mascara smudged beneath her eyes.

Arthur marched up to the bar rail before the judge entered, leaning over toward me with a face twisted in rage. "You ungrateful little bitch," Arthur hissed under his breath. "You think you can ruin my family? I made you! You were nothing before my son brought you into our home!"
I looked Arthur dead in the eye, my voice perfectly level. "You didn't make me, Arthur. You borrowed from me. And today, the debt comes due."
