Chapter 3 - The Collapse of an Empire

Judge Harrison banged his gavel, his stern eyes sweeping across the packed courtroom. "Silence in the court! We are here to consider the state’s motion for an emergency freeze on all personal and corporate assets belonging to Ethan Cole, as well as bail proceedings for Defendants Cole and Thorne."
Ethan’s lead attorney, Richard Vance—a slick, silver-haired litigator known for defending corporate tycoons—stood up immediately.
"Your Honor," Vance began smoothly, "my client is a respected business leader and the victim of a vindictive ex-wife who is using an unfortunate personal disagreement to sabotage a multi-million-dollar merger. Ms. Bennett has selectively leaked internal corporate documents to create a panic. We request immediate dismissal of all financial charges and bail set at a reasonable amount so Mr. Cole can manage his company."
Judge Harrison looked over his spectacles at Evelyn. "Ms. Reed, your response?"
Evelyn stood up gracefully. "Your Honor, we are not relying on ' leaked documents.' We are relying on sworn affidavits from the United States Treasury, the SEC, and the forensic audit report conducted by Ms. Claire Bennett herself."
"Ms. Bennett is an interested party with a clear bias," Vance interrupted sharply.
"Ms. Bennett is a Certified Fraud Examiner and the original Chief Financial Architect of Cole Enterprises," Evelyn countered coldly. "And her findings have just been corroborated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
Evelyn walked forward and handed a thick blue binder to the bailiff, who passed it to the judge.
"If Your Honor turns to page forty-two," Evelyn continued, "you will see that Defendant Ethan Cole personally authorized thirty-two wire transfers totaling forty-seven million dollars from Cole Enterprises' client escrow accounts directly to shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands under the name 'BT Capital Holdings'—an entity entirely controlled by Defendant Bianca Thorne."
A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. Arthur Cole turned sharply to look at Ethan, his face darkening with shock. "What?" Arthur muttered. "Ethan, what did you do?"
Ethan stammered, looking frantically at Bianca. "It... it was an investment! Bianca said her father’s firm was matching the returns!"
"Her father’s firm declared bankruptcy six months ago, Mr. Cole," Evelyn revealed, her voice ringing clearly through the chamber. "The money wasn't invested. It was used to pay off Ms. Thorne’s personal gambling debts at casinos in Macau and Monaco, as well as lease a private jet for their upcoming honeymoon in the Maldives."
Bianca covered her face with her hands, sobbing aloud. "Ethan promised me he had unlimited funds! He said his ex-wife was a nobody who signed over all her rights!"
"Silence!" Judge Harrison roared, slamming his gavel down three times. He read through the blue binder for five tense minutes, his brow furrowing deeper with every page. Finally, he looked up at the defense table with utter disgust.
"The evidence presented here shows a catastrophic level of deliberate fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and criminal conversion," Judge Harrison stated. "Furthermore, given the physical assault on Ms. Bennett that resulted in an emergency premature birth, Defendant Thorne represents an ongoing physical threat."
"Your Honor, please!" Bianca wept. "I'm a victim here too!"
"Bail for Bianca Thorne is set at five million dollars," Judge Harrison declared. "Bail for Ethan Cole is denied. All personal and corporate assets associated with Ethan Cole, Cole Enterprises, and affiliated offshore entities are hereby frozen under federal asset forfeiture statutes. A court-appointed receiver will assume control of Cole Enterprises immediately."
Ethan slumped forward, his forehead hitting the wooden table. Arthur Cole looked like he had been struck by lightning. He stood frozen as the bailiffs escorted Ethan and Bianca toward the rear holding cells.

As Ethan was dragged past my table, he stopped, staring at me through desperate, bloodshot eyes. "Claire... please. Talk to me. We can fix this. I'll give you everything. I'll give you the house, the cars, whatever you want! Just don't destroy me!"
I looked at him, feeling no anger, no sadness—only a cold, clean clarity. "You destroyed yourself, Ethan. I just kept the receipts."
