Chapter 8 - Ethan’s Final Reckoning

Six months later, the criminal trial of Ethan Cole, Arthur Cole, and Bianca Thorne came to a swift and decisive end.

Faced with overwhelming forensic evidence, digital wiretaps, and Bianca’s state's-evidence testimony, both Ethan and Arthur pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy and grand larceny charges to avoid a lengthier trial.

I sat in the front row of the gallery holding six-month-old Noah in my arms. He was healthy, bright-eyed, and growing stronger every day. He wore a tiny navy cardigan, oblivious to the drama unfolding around him.

Judge Harrison took his bench and delivered the final sentencings.

"Bianca Thorne," Judge Harrison declared, "for your role in the financial conspiracy and your physical assault on Claire Bennett, you are sentenced to four years in state prison, followed by three years of supervised release."

Bianca wept quietly as she was led away by guards, accepting her fate with head bowed.

"Ethan Cole," the judge continued, looking sternly over his spectacles. "You abused your position of trust, stole tens of millions from innocent clients, and showed a callous disregard for human life during the medical emergency of your former spouse and unborn child. You are sentenced to ten years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole, and ordered to pay restitution of thirty million dollars."

Ethan slumped back in his seat, staring blankly at the ceiling as the sentence sank in.

"And Arthur Cole," Judge Harrison’s voice turned icy. "You orchestrated a criminal enterprise, corrupted your own family, and attempted to flee the country while actively putting others in harm's way. You are sentenced to eighteen years in high-security federal custody."

Arthur didn't cry. He turned his head slowly, searching the gallery until his eyes landed on me and Noah. The rage in his eyes had burned out, replaced by the hollow realization that his legacy, his name, and his fortune had been completely wiped off the face of the earth.

As the guards escorted the two men through the heavy double doors at the side of the courtroom, Ethan looked back at Noah one last time. But Noah was smiling up at me, reaching his tiny hands for my silver watch.

Ethan Cole was no longer a father, a CEO, or a winner. He was just a inmate number in the federal registry.
